Unidentified COVID-19 variant found in severe Ontario long-term care outbreak

"has a mutation in the same part of its genetic code as the variants recently discovered in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil."

That's bad news. I've read one article that the Brazilian variant is a concern regarding vaccine, with speculation that annual vaccines will be necessary for a few years as the virus strengthens and that the vaccine needs to be updated to better address the mutations.

Some evidence that UK variant is more deadly:

"There is some evidence that a new coronavirus variant first identified in southeast England carries a higher risk of death than the original strain, the British government's chief scientific adviser said Friday — though he stressed that the data is uncertain.

Patrick Vallance told a news conference that "there is evidence that there is an increased risk for those who have the new variant."

He said that for a man in his 60s with the original version of the virus, "the average risk is that for 1,000 people who got infected, roughly 10 would be expected to unfortunately die."

"With the new variant, for 1,000 people infected, roughly 13 or 14 people might be expected to die," he said.

But Vallance stressed that "the evidence is not yet strong" and more research is needed."

I'm not sure if this has been posted, can't keep up with this thread, but here it is. Seems it has to be used every day though? (So would that presumably mean for the rest of our lives, since it seems that Covid doesn't seem to be expected to go away permanently?):

The Israeli co-founder of a nasal spray that kills 99.9% of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, has told Jewish News that she believes the spray will be a game changer in the fight against Covid-19.
....
The first UK clinical trials for The SaNOtize Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray (NONS) begins this week.

Israeli behind ‘game-changing’ Covid nasal spray says it’s 99.9% effective

I've read about nasal sprays before but I can't remember what the consensus was on their effectiveness.

Montreal researchers conclude colchicine tablet is effective at treating COVID-19 symptoms | National Post
The results showed the medication helped reduce hospitalizations by a quarter, the need for mechanical ventilation by half and deaths by 44 per cent
“In a news release issued Friday, the institute described its findings as a “major scientific discovery” that could help millions of COVID-19 patients around the world.

Colchicine, an oral tablet that’s inexpensive and easy to make, is already known and used for other diseases. The study looked at its effects on 4,159 COVID-19 patients....”

Maybe Colchicine should be widely distributed in Canada to reduce the burden on the health care system while the vaccine is rolled out. It could be managed through pharmacies.

Grim news today. The woman who was given a vaccine mix-up is 93 years old. Does the covid vaccine experiment turn people into human test subjects without proper consent and oversight?

Then there's the doctor who was first to be diagnosed with the UK strain, and who lied about having contact with a visitor from the UK - dismissed from two nursing homes.

We also have the 19 year old male from London, Ont. who worked at a nursing home, he died of the covid. 95% of residents at a care home have the UK bug. Last week there were one or two cases, this week it's "in the community."

This stands out for me, regarding the 19 year old who died from covid. It looks like it might be another instance of someone having the illness, recovering and then dying.

I remember back in March some descriptions of the virus were that people get sick, seem to be on the mend, then they rapidly get much worse and die. Could that be what happened here, where he was deemed recovered when he wasn't? I wonder whether he had two negative tests as was required back in March, or whether today's protocol is simply a 2 week time frame.

Although this isn't a pattern or a fact of the virus, this is the second time I've read about someone who is young 19-29, who recovers from the virus and the drops dead a short time later.

"Summers said the diagnosis came within the last four weeks, and Dabeh's infectious period had actually ended. An investigation into his death is underway he said."
