Toronto police say they've made an arrest in the 30-year-old murder of Donna Proian, a University of Toronto secretary who was stabbed and strangled in her downtown apartment in 1981.


In a news conference Friday afternoon, police are expected to disclose the identity of the suspect in the woman's slaying.


Proian, 30, died after being stabbing and strangled in her penthouse apartment at Village by the Grange, a condo-style building adjacent to the Ontario College of Art and Design University.


Her husband last saw her at 8 a.m. on June 23 of that year, and returned to their home to find her dead at 11:30 a.m.

What is no longer a mystery is the identity of Proian's alleged killer.... Toronto police staged a news conference to announce charges against Proian's long-ago neighbour, Ernest William Westergard, who now stands accused of first-degree murder.

Police did not have to go far to find Westergard when newly tested DNA evidence allegedly linked him to the crime: the former carpet salesman was in penitentiary in Kingston, Ont., after being convicted in the 1994 murder of Sonia Run, who was beaten and strangled inside her Mississauga home, where the accused had installed new flooring...

Nothing had been stolen and there was no indication of sexual assault, police said. The accused lived in a neighbouring apartment, but there was no deeper relationship between the pair and no clear reason why Proian had been targeted, Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan said, calling it an "opportunistic" crime.
