Homicide detectives are investigating the disappearance of Elisa Lam, a Canadian tourist who was last seen in downtown Los Angeles on Jan. 31.

Elisa does have a history of depression but apparently nothing like this has ever happened. She's never been in trouble, say LAPD detectives, and isn't known to be a drug user.

LAPD officer Christopher No said Friday police still don't know what Lam was doing in the elevator, adding it's too early to speculate whether drugs or alcohol were involved. "We can't say what was happening. Maybe she might have just been playing around with someone, it could have been anything. We are keeping an open mind on all aspects," No said.

snipped...Her final destination was Santa Cruz. Lam’s family doesn’t know why she stopped in Los Angeles.

Fadel says her parents are now in Los Angeles aiding in the investigation but declined to make a public comment. Fadel asks Martinez if Lam could be running away from something or someone. “No, the unusual part is she was in contact with her parents every day. That’s the only strange thing the LAPD sees. The contact just stopped.”

According to the LAPD, Lam arrived in L.A. on Jan. 26. The last sighting of her was on Jan. 31 by staff at the Cecil Hotel, around the same time the elevator footage was taken.

A Canadian woman who was last seen at a downtown Los Angeles hotel almost three weeks ago was found dead Tuesday in a water tank at the top of the building, authorities said.

LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh tells the Weekly that a body was found in the hotel's working water tank on its roof.

He said that after some guests complained of low water pressure in their bathrooms a "maintenance man" went up to take a look and found the body of a woman in her 20s inside the tank.

The Los Angeles Fire Department tells us they were called to the area at 1:10 p.m. today. Borihanh says firefighters are working as we speak in an attempt to remove the body.

Authorities were at a "body recovery" operation on the roof of the Hotel Cecil, where a 21-year-old missing tourist from Vancouver, B.C., was staying.
