UBC RCMP seek assistance in missing grad student case unsolved for 30 years

On October 28, 1988, 21-year-old meteorology graduate student Emerson Dobroskay from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was out in Vancouver with his friends Dave, Kim, and Mark.

After he left the group at University of British Columbia's Pit Pub at closing time at 1 a.m., he was never seen or heard from again. He never returned to his room at Totem Park Residence's Haida House.

Although extensive ground and aerial searches were conducted and tips were received from across Canada, the U.S., and abroad, no evidence of his whereabouts was found.

I searched his name on Facebook and a post came up mentioning him as being a guest on a recent radio show in New York with a topic related to UFOs. Odd, it's such an uncommon name and to have it tied to something vaguely related to his grad topic (kind - meterology/space/UFOs?...). I have messaged the author of the post to see if the Emerson on his show is originally from Canada.

I suspect that might be the senior ED referred to in the mom's obit. It would have been the mom's first husband and presumably Emerson Junior's father:

If that's the missing ED's mother's obit, it says she married a Nick, not an Emerson? And then she had a son called Emerson Sr and a grandson called Emerson Jr. Am I reading that right?

Sorry sunnynz … you are correct. It would not have been her husband, but the obit makes reference to Emerson Sr and later Emerson Jr, so I think she was Emerson Jr's grandmother??

ETA: Main thing I was trying to point out is that there is an Emerson Dobroskay Sr who could be the individual discussed in the UFO articles.

Right - got it. The thing I found on Facebook has this ED being interviewed in a recent radio show so whoever this one is he's still alive. Will let you know if the guy who posted the link to the show responds to my message. Unfortunately I can't get the link to the radio show to work so I can listen!

'It's still a horror': No answers, 30 years after UBC student's disappearance - NEWS 1130

For decades, Emerson Dobroskay has been living every parents worst nightmare.

30 years ago his only child went missing and Dobroskay hasn’t seen or heard from him since.

“It’s still a horror and everybody was just numb, couldn’t believe it,” says Dobroskay. “There’s no evidence one way or the other that he’s with us or not with us, it’s just a void.”

“He was gone,” says Dobroskay Sr. from his home on Vancouver Island, “and it’s totally out of character for him to just take off like that.”

Described as happy, a bit of an introvert and smart — with particular strength in math and science — Dobroskay Jr. had dreams of becoming a weatherman at the time he was attending UBC. Bright even as a boy, he started Grade 1 a year earlier than other kids his age and had recently graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor’s Degree with Great Distinction.

“First in math, second in physics or vise versa, I can’t remember. He led in one and was second in the other,” recalls Dobroskay Sr. He was proud to admit his son was smarter than him.

In fact, his son’s intelligence is one of the reasons he believes a man with physical features similar to his son spotted at a shelter the summer after he went missing, could have been the same young man.
