  • #121
'natural processes' 27 after death made body visible.

ETA: 27 HOURS it should read

  • #122
In estimated 2-3 feet of water (unclear if that is what I heard/people talking over the officer).

  • #123
Not a closed case. Working with coroner. No specifics on how long he was deceased before recovery.

Visibility limited in culvert. It is a storm sewer under the roadway.

Thank you so much Lexiintoronto, it's greatly appreciated!

Culvert 4-5 feet in diameter, 1/3 to 1/2 of culvert covered in water. Various depths of water inside the culvert.

They believe it was accidental, no indication of a crime.

Number of channels that connect to the storm sewer under roadway.

Finnigan Danne drowned in culvert shortly after going missing
Police say his body was missed in initial searches because it was submerged

Ilene O'Connor and her husband Michael live in the house next to where Danne was found. They didn't know the boy personally but said the neighbourhood rallied around the family in the search.

"There were hundreds of people out here," she said. "Every neighbour in the area was here."

Police never told them explicitly that they'd found Danne's body, but it was evident, O'Connor said. She said they removed the body around 10 p.m. Sunday.

"They waited until after dark," O'Connor said. "[Police] came to the door and asked us if we wouldn't mind staying in the house. He said, 'You don't want to see this.'"

Heartbreaking

This is unbelievably tragic. I applaud LE for handling the family with sensitivity.

"I searched the area twice," said Jon Bailey, who lives three doors away from Danne and spent most of the weekend looking for the boy. "It's a horrible feeling...I just wish I'd searched a bit harder."

Bailey said he was surprised at the news since he had partially crept through the culvert himself earlier in the search.

"I had walked in and I had gotten about 10 feet in and I slipped, and my shoes had gotten soaked, my flashlight shorted out," said Bailey. "Instead of keeping going, I just turned around and walked out...I just kind of dismissed that spot, thinking that maybe somebody else had gone there, maybe police were going to go there. I wish I hadn't."

My comment -If it had to happen, it sounded like Finn was out on an adventure. Maybe in the water he was free from some of his physical limitations, or he just wanted to explore.

I'm sorry for the passing of this sweet soul.

Did he just get stuck or something and drown? Was he unable to climb back out? I just don't get it. So sad.

He has a muscular problem right? Maybe he couldn't get back out.

More from presser (rewatching): they believe the K9s had not been into that area. During the 29-hour search the officers did not enter the depth of the culvert - why? It was a rescue, not a recovery. The police had limited resources in order to conduct the search.

They believe the middle of the culvert is 'deep', unsure of depth.

They would not comment on the rules and regulations of any necessary covers for the openings of the culvert.

My comment - I would expect there to be an inquest into why there weren't gated covers to the openings. The neighbour that is closest to where Finn was found said there was a covering at one point.

It sounds as if he may have been pulled towards the bottom of the storm sewer if there were several channels of water flowing into it. Or he entered a depth where he physically could not remove himself or swim. My opinion only.

That was my thought there should be metal bars to prevent anyone from getting in. That's how they are where I grew up.

Thinking of the little guy wearing his Special Olympics t shirt, and could not help but wonder if he was trying something out ....
imo, speculation.

With 20/20 hindsight...I noticed the sewer grate in the photo above. Wouldn't there be a manhole close to the culvert, seeing that it connected to a storm sewer system that might need maintenance from time to time?

The police and one searcher said they only could go so far into the culvert - wouldn't it be accessible by the manhole?

“It’ misadventure in the fact he left his home without his mother being aware. And how he ended up in the culvert – it would seem he probably crawled in there as a young boy who liked to hide,” Det. David Brady told reporters.

There was no clear reason as to why he may have left home, Brady said.

Danne had a neuromuscular disorder that caused him to walk with a limp, but Brady said it wasn’t clear whether that had contributed to his death.
Police told reporters Monday that the depth of the culvert was greater at its center than at its edges and that a number of factors prevented searchers from spotting Danne inside.

“We believe based on the recovery of Finnigan’s body in that location, we believe that he was submerged until the time that he was detected by the citizen that alerted our officers in the area,” Staff Sgt. Marty Schulenberg said.

He added that visibility is limited inside the culvert, even with strong flashlights, and that the two to three feet of water would have made it difficult for police sniffer dogs to detect the boy’s scent.

When I was younger, I babysat for a little red headed boy with CP and even with both legs in casts, a bar attached between the casts, that little stinker kept me on my toes. We knew he had mobility issues but I guess nobody told him. Little boys are just adventurous and curious about the world and I am glad Caleb had at least one more adventure before his final one in heaven.
