Case #: 1999-276
The Toronto Police Service continues to appeal for information about a mother who has been missing for 28 years.

Gloria Jean Abotossaway, who is known as Marty, was last seen on Friday, February 14, 1992. She was 27 years old at the time.

She was residing at 90 Shuter Street at the time of her disappearance and told family members she was going to Moss Park with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend is only known as 'Lenny', and they were apparently going to meet a man called 'Bob Russo'.

Investigators urge anyone with any information about the identities of 'Lenny' or 'Bob Russo' to contact them.

Gloria left behind most of her belongings at her address but she did take her Birth Certificate and status card with her. Her card has been inactive and she has not filed a tax return since 2000.

She was a member of the Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nations, other wise known as Sucker Creek First Nations in Little Current, Manitoulin.

She had previously gone missing but would always return within a month.

On the same night as her disappearance David Marlatt was killed in Gloria's apartment. Two men were charged and convicted of his death. Officers spoke with Gloria that night and it was determined she was not involved but she went missing shortly after. The reason for her disappearance is still unknown but investigators are trying to determine if it was as a result of the homicide.

Gloria is described as 5’2", 130 lbs., with long brown hair and brown eyes.

Investigators and her family continue to appeal for her safe return. Officers want to stress she is not in any trouble.

A family photo of Gloria from when she was 18 has been released, as well as two artist renditions of what investigators believe Gloria would look like today aged 57.

Detectives have also released a video appeal.

Anyone with information about Gloria's whereabouts, no matter how small, is urged to contact Toronto Police Missing Persons Unit on 416-808-7411, or by emailing [email protected], the Toronto Police Aboriginal Peace Keeping Unit on 416-808-7046 or Crime Stoppers on 416-222-8477.

It states in the article that she hasn't filed a tax return since 2000, but went missing in 1992.... is that a typo? Or does this mean that they believe she is still alive or was alive as of 2000?

So, her case number starts with 1999, which would be the year it was opened, according to the very poorly written Star article that @dotr kindly made legible, and linked to above: Toronto police make fresh appeal in search for woman who went missing 28 years ago
(the writer refers to the murderers of David Marlatt as being “convicted and charged” one must be charged to be convicted), I’m going to try to interpret a bit. The investigator states that the case was re-reported in 1999, there had been some kind of confusion earlier, thus the date of 2000 for the Tax Return search from makes sense in light of that. I’d imagine that there are no earlier records, if the CRA says we only need to keep them for six years, as that’s how far they’re going to go back for a review, they aren’t keeping old returns either.

My suspicion is that there’s no way to know if Marty filed closer to the date she likely went missing.
This would apply to her Status Card too, as in using it for any Tax Credits, Health Care Credits etc. Now, it could have been used to cross the US border by land in lieu of a passport, but somehow I suspect the ICE would have at least a notation of that number in 1999, and if she crossed over on a Reserve that covers both sides, they certainly would have a record.
Edit to add a note about our Status Cards.

"Gloria left behind most of her belongings at her address but she did take her Birth Certificate and status card with her. Her card has been inactive."

This part didn't make sense. A status card is not a bank card or credit card. It's an ID card that some Canadian aboriginal people have. It wouldn't have much activity with it.

Gloria went missing the same night a man was killed in her apartment. Police have said she is not in trouble and it was determined she was not involved. She hasn't been seen since.

<<Gloria left behind all identifying information with the exception of her birth certificate and First Nations status card. Her status card has remained inactive and she has not filed taxes since at least 2000.

On the night she vanished an unrelated man was murdered in her apartment complex. Gloria was seen speaking to police that night, though she was not thought to be involved. Two men were eventually charged with the murder. It's unclear if this man's murder is related to Gloria's disappearance and she remains missing>>
.
<<She may use the surname "Martha."

Tribal Information: An unconfirmed source reported to JFNW that Gloria is from the Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation>>
