"Just 25 when she went missing

It's one of the oldest missing persons cases in Newfoundland and Labrador — a cold case, as cold as the day in late 1982 that Henrietta Millek vanished.

The Inuit woman — described as fun loving, with dreams of becoming a nurse — was just 25 when she disappeared.

She was last seen at a St. John’s club.

"I think someone took her, I really do," said Assumpta Lawes, who tended bar at the Key Club on Water Street West that night three decades ago.

Police believe Millek was at the Key Club on or about the night of Dec. 11, 1982.

It was the last place she was ever seen. Her family and friends never heard from her again.

"I'm always thinking, where is she?" said Millek’s best friend, Mary Pia Benuen. "Is she still alive?"

Benuen grew up in Sheshatshui and met Millek in Labrador. Both women had come to St. John's to further their education"

Police say new evidence has led them to believe Millek was last seen on foot in the area of the Trans-Canada Highway, headed toward Conception Bay North along Roaches Line.

On Saturday, RNC and RCMP officers along with search and rescue volunteers will conduct a ground search in the Roaches Line area for evidence in the case.

<<Henrietta Millek, 25, was a mother of two when she disappeared from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador on Dec. 11, 1982. She was last seen inside a bar with two men. The only trace of her was her purse that was found on the floor by the bartender. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary requested DNA testing on the purse in January 2013. In 2016, a witness came forward with information that he remembered. He thinks he picked her up hitchhiking that night and the police say there’s not reason not to believe him. The information didn’t lead to any other breaks in the case. The police say there’s a possibility that Henrietta succumbed to the weather.>>

<<Henrietta moved there from her home community in Nain, N.L., an Inuit settlement north of the city, leaving her first son, Chesley, and family behind to further her education.

She was taking courses at the Memorial University of Newfoundland and working odd jobs to make ends meet.

Mary Pia says Henrietta struggled with alcohol; her baby boy was taken away by social services when he was about two months old.>>

<<Police say new evidence has led them to believe Millek was last seen on foot in the area of the Trans-Canada Highway, headed toward Conception Bay North along Roaches Line.>>

<<A resident living on Blackhead Road in St John's remembered Henrietta coming to the door in the middle of the night apparently looking for her boyfriend who lived in the area. She was last seen walking down Blackhead Road headed for Cape Spear. >>

<<In 2016 a man came forward to report having picked up a hitchhiking woman matching Henrietta's description during this time period. She told the driver she had plans to visit family in Makinsons and he dropped her off on the Trans-Canada Highway at the intersection of Roaches Line. These visit plans match those Henrietta told her family about the day previous. Authorities believes this to be a credible sighting.>>

Tribal Information: Henrietta is from the small Inuit community of Nain, Newfoundland and Labrador. She is described as Aboriginal.
