''Keeley said the jury will hear the girl sustained multiple injuries, including to her face, scalp, arms and legs, but the forensic pathologist will testify that strangulation was the cause of the death.''

''Huggins, who was the first person to testify in the trial, said that police used technology to “ping” the girl’s cellphone allowing them to find its location within a 30-metre radius. That led them to the southeastern area of the park, he said.

“Most people carry their cellphone at all times,” Huggins said. “The idea is if you find the person’s cellphone, you will find the person.”

Huggins said he and another officer began searching the area and he noticed a pink wallet in the brush just off a path. Huggins testified that, wearing gloves, he opened it to find the cellphone, a picture that fit the description of the missing teen and a student identification card with the girl’s name.

He said he then requested the help of police dog services as he was concerned about contaminating the area in the event the body was nearby.

The dog and its handler quickly located the girl’s body about 20 metres away from her wallet, Huggins testified''

4/28/23 Friday, Trial Day 1: In an opening statement, Crown attorney Isobel Keeley said the court will hear evidence showing the murder was random, but DNA results will prove Ali sexually assaulted her. A B.C. Supreme Court trial can expect to hear evidence that shows a 13-year-old girl from Burnaby, B.C., was passing through a neighborhood park when she was dragged off a pathway into the forest by Ibrahim Ali, sexually assaulted and strangled, the Crown prosecutor told the jury Friday.
Crown witness: RCMP Const. Richard Huggins, who was assigned to the Burnaby detachment in July 2017, said he was dispatched to search for the missing girl shortly after midnight on July 19.
The trial is expected to take about two months and will hear testimony from about 50 people, including civilians, police and expert witnesses, Keeley told the jury in opening statement.

A jury heard Monday from one of the officers who located the body of a slain B.C. teen on the Vancouver-Burnaby border, in the second day of witness testimony in the trial of Ibrahim Ali.
[.....]
Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt. Stacey Rogers was among a group of officers scouring Burnaby’s Central Park on July 18. Police were following up on a cellphone ping as they searched for the teen, who had been reported missing earlier that day.
[.....]
Proceedings ended early Monday when defence counsel Ben Lynseky told the court Ali had developed a headache and could not tolerate it any longer.

Is the accused saying he had no contact with the deceased at all? I cannot find out much. Is he going down the "I was with her but she was alive when they parted" route? The DNA is very telling.

IMO

“A lot of red flags” went up in RCMP Staff Sgt. Stacey Roger’s mind on the night of July 18, 2017 when the phone of a missing 13-year-old girl was tracked to Burnaby’s Central Park.

Rogers was in Vancouver Supreme Court Monday to testify at the trial of Ibrahim Ali, the man accused of first-degree murder in the girl’s death.''

''Two officers who had found the teen’s wallet and phone beside a darkened path in the south east section of the park directed Rogers to where they were just after 1 a.m. on July 19, 2017, and she was there when a police dog team entered the forest beside the path.

“He was only in there for a matter of seconds before he started screaming frantically for an ambulance to be called,” Rogers said.

She said she vividly remembered the dog handler exiting the woods.''

“He circled around with his dog and was repetitively saying ‘No, no, no!’ because he was extremely distraught,” Rogers said.

At that point, she said she expected there was a body in the woods.

At the scene, she found the missing girl lying lifelessly in the bush.''

It's sad that they even need this on the record. Even if she was interested in boys, it wouldn't be an invitation to being brutally attacked and murdered. Poor kid.

A close friend of a teen girl murdered on the Vancouver-Burnaby border nearly six years ago told a B.C. jury about her last time seeing the victim...

She testified that she never saw her friend drink alcohol or use drugs, and said the victim did not have a boyfriend and was not interested in boys. The pair talked about cartoons, anime and math, she said.

I 100% agree. I do think though this friend testified to discount what the accused is going to say. With the DNA evidence the accused its only left with the scenario that his meeting with the deceased was consensual. I got a feeling the accused is going to try and blame the victim in some way.

A 13-year-old girl who was found dead in Burnaby Central Park would make frequent trips to the park alone and once even fell asleep there, according to a police statement made by a witness that was read in court today.

During the cross-examination of a witness who says she was a close friend of the victim, defence lawyers went through the police statement she made a day after the teen was found dead.
[.....]
In the statement, she also details her final encounter with her 13-year-old friend who was found dead in Burnaby Central Park.

"You're lying about that, aren't you?" McCoullough said to the witness, who said she only read "the important parts" of her police statement in preparation of her testimony.

The back-and-forth prompted the judge to address McCoullough directly.

"I don't want you to accuse anyone of being a liar," said B.C. Supreme Court Justice Lance Bernard, before telling McCoullough to continue his cross-examination "without the sarcasm and the scoffing."

Wow, he's doing his client no favours by going after this young lady who is testifying as to what happened when she was ~13 years old.

And where was he going with this line of questioning?! Suggesting the victim strangled herself? Or asked an older stranger to kill her because her parents were getting divorced? Jeez. I know defense counsel play an important role in the justice system but sometimes I can only shake my head.

Later in the day, McCullough, referring to the statement again, says the witness told investigators that the girl claimed she had previously attempted suicide.

“She told you she tried to kill herself because her parents were divorcing and she wasn’t successful,”

The statement was quickly met with an objection by the Crown before the witness could answer.
