Not finding anything new either, maybe the illness is holding things back?

Yes that is what I was thinking.... I guess we wait...

  • #82
I'm assuming that the trial is delayed due to the defendant not being well

With that could this trial collapse if the defendant is to ill to attend regularly?

It must be heart wrenching for the victims family and friends who have waited 6 years for answers and justice.

I have found ZERO info on what is going on since the last article I believe for May 29th date. So yes, it could be he is still ill - but you would think one of these reporters would tell us...

I thought the same thing myself that in we would at least get some info on the defendant's illness.

Then it got me thinking.. Is Canada like the US where different states have different rules regarding their legal systems. Maybe this state has very strict reporting mechanisms.

Be interesting to see if any people aware of Canadian law could chime in.

Well - they did report the first time he was sick - so why not just say he is still sick! Easy peasy.... :)

Finally an article!!

June 20, 2023

Days after a teenage girl's body was discovered in a Burnaby park in 2017, an RCMP lab began analyzing evidence on what was instantly a priority case.

That's how Jeremy Fenn, a search technologist with the Mounties' forensic lab, came to be involved in the matter.

Fenn took the stand for the second day Tuesday at the Supreme Court of B.C. in Vancouver for the trial of Ibrahim Ali.
[.....]
The defense has not yet had an opportunity to cross-examine DNA witnesses.

Crown prosecutors contend the victim was passing through Burnaby's Central Park on July 18, 2017, when she was attacked and dragged into the woods before she was sexually assaulted and strangled.

Fenn is expected to continue testimony Wednesday, 6/21/23.

Ah - found another one - for Monday's trial.

June 19, 2023
The trial of a man accused of murdering a young B.C. teenager resumed Monday after a two-week break, with more grim testimony on forensic evidence.

Ibrahim Ali has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the July, 2017 killing. The victim’s identity is protected by a publication ban.

On Monday, the girl’s father sat silently in the back of courtroom 53 at the B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver with his head down and eyes closed as forensic DNA expert Christine Crossman resumed her testimony.

[.....]
The trial is scheduled to continue Tuesday, with a second DNA expert, Jeremy Fenn, who has expertise in the area of biological substances including semen.[/i]

An RCMP lab worker who discovered foreign DNA on swabs taken from the body of a murdered Burnaby teen was never told to examine the victim's clothes, a jury trial heard on Wednesday.

Jeremy Fenn, a search technologist with the RCMP's forensic lab, is trained in identifying biological trace evidence including blood, sperm, and saliva. Earlier this week, he testified that he discovered sperm cells on body swabs taken from the victim's vagina and anus. He recalled identifying blood and skin cells on some of the swabs.

During cross-examination, defence lawyer Kevin McCullough asked Fenn whether he analyzed any clothing items from the victim, including a T-shirt with a white stain on the shoulder.
[.....]
Prosecutors say Ali's DNA was recovered from her body. The defence has yet to present its argument to the jury.

June 22, 2023
The arrest of Ibrahim Ali, accused of killing a 13-year-old girl, was carefully planned by police, interrupted by a car crash and ultimately yielded an arrest without resistance, a jury trial heard on Thursday.
[.....]
Burnaby RCMP Const. Jason Cutler told B.C. Supreme Court how Ali was taken into custody just over a year after the murder is alleged to have taken place.

Cutler testified that on Sept. 7, 2018, he and a partner were briefed and given a description of Ali.
[.....]
Ali surrendered without incident when placed under arrest, Cutler said.

"I told him he was under arrest for murder and asked him to step out of the vehicle and show me his hands," he said.
[.....]
The jury was also shown video of Ali being booked into custody at the detachment. He appears compliant through the process as officers removed his boots and belt while he faced a wall with his hands up. Videos of the booking had not finished screening by the time court adjourned Thursday.

Another Mountie, Cpl. Patrick Vandevelk, testified earlier Thursday. He told the jury about canvassing the apartment building the victim lived in for video and neighbour statements about the victim's last days.
[.....]
The building superintendent, Ioan Theodor, told the court about the building's layout and what surveillance cameras the building had.

Ali's trial began in April and resumed this week after a pause of about three weeks.

The trial is expected to resume Friday, 6/23/23.
