''RCMP surveillance footage shows Ibrahim Ali taken into custody moments after his 2018 arrest as officers remove his boots, belt and cellphone, the culmination of a year-long murder investigation into the death of a 13-year-old girl.

The footage, shown to the jury in Ali's first-degree murder trial, shows him in Burnaby's RCMP detachment on Sept. 7, 2018 with his hands against the wall while he is searched. Officers testified that he was cooperative.

His cellphone is among items placed on the counter. The jury also watched an hour-long video of the phone sitting on a counter before it was bagged by an investigator and taken into evidence storage. Prosecutors said the purpose of the video was to show "continuity" of the evidence, meaning that the phone wasn't tampered with.''

''Investigators have testified they were able to extract the phone number associated with the cellphone that was found in Ali's pocket on the day of his arrest. It was registered to a Bell Mobility account under the name Shamdan Ali. ''

Ibrahim Ali in an undated Facebook photo. Ali is charged with the first-degree murder of 13-year-old girl, who was found dead in Burnaby's Central Park in July 2017. (Facebook)

'Mak said the location of the cell tower the calls went through was consistent with where the victim's phone was found in Central Park.

Mak cautioned that towers couldn't prove the exact location of the phone, but usually indicate a phone is within a three-to-four kilometre radius of them.''

July 12, 2023

Lawyers for Ibrahim Ali, who’s accused of murdering a teenaged girl in a Burnaby, B.C., park six years ago, have been trying to cast doubt on the reliability of cellphone data suggesting his phone was in the vicinity at the time of the killing.
70c8fc80

The jury in the British Columbia Supreme Court trial has heard testimony over the past two weeks about cellphones associated with Ali and the girl, who cannot be identified because of a publication ban.
[.....]
The various experts have all testified that there’s no way to tell from connection data exactly where a person is when they make a phone call, and while the closest tower is usually used multiple factors can affect that choice.
[.....]
The Crown has told the jury they will hear evidence showing the girl’s killing was random, but DNA results would prove Ali sexually assaulted the girl and cellphone records would place him and the victim in or near the park on the day she died.

They said evidence would show the girl was passing through the park when she was dragged off a pathway into the forest by Ali, sexually assaulted and strangled.

The defence has not yet told the jury its theory of events.

Not much info on who the witnesses were on 7/12 - so I will just skip that day.... :)

Here's an article with at least one witness...

July 12, 2023
[....]
Don Calpito, an expert in cellular coverage with Telus Communications, says things like tall buildings or capacity issues might degrade a signal and cause a phone to connect through different cell towers.
[.....]
David Mak, a senior investigator with Rogers Communications, meanwhile testified that the Bell phone Ali was carrying never had any contact with two phones whose Rogers accounts were paid for by the girl’s mother.[/i]
