Circumstances of Disappearance
Caraley was last seen in Jasper National Park in Alberta where he had been climbing in the ice fields since July 19. He began the climb to Mt. Athabasca and Mt. Andromeda alone, leaving some of his gear behind. When he failed to return, he was reported missing to park authorities and a search was conducted. Caraley, a Columbia University student from Tarrytown, NY, is presumed dead although his body has not been recovered.

James Christopher Caraley went mountain climbing on Mount Andromeda, in the Columbia Icefield between Jasper and Banff, Alberta and never returned. Police searches were negative.

On July 21, 1979, Chris Caraley (age unknown) of New York left work with people he met in the Icefields Campground that he planned to solo the north bowl of Mt. Andromeda, traverse the col to Mt. James Christopher Caraley, a Columbia University student who had been mountain‐climbing in the Canadian Rockies, has been reported missing and presumed dead, although his body has not been recovered. He was 19 years'old.
Mr. Caraley, who lived in Tarrytown, N.Y., spent the first part of the summer climbing near Boulder, Colo., and then went on to Jasper National Park, where he had been climbing in the ice fields since July 19. Eager to climb Mt. Athabasca and Mt. Andromeda within a twoday schedule he had set for himself, he began the climb alone, leaving some of his gear behind.
When the youth failed to return, his abience was reported to park authorities, who instituted a search and notified his family.
Mr. Caraley was a philosophy student at Columbia, about to enter his junior year. He was a 1977 graduate of the Sleepy Hollow High School in Tarrytown.
He is survived by his father, Dr. Demetrios Caraley, a professor of political science at Columbia; his mother, Jeanne Benner Caraley; a brother, David, and sister, Anne, all of Tarrytown.
A memorial service is planned for September at Columbia.
