A 12-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man are facing several charges, including second-degree murder, in connection with a series of violent, unprovoked attacks targeting vulnerable members of the city, including one that left a 62-year-old man dead, Toronto police said.

"Toronto police are appealing for information as they work to identify the next-of-kin of an unhoused man who was attacked in Nathan Phillips Square in late August and died days later.

The incident happened just after 6 a.m. on Aug. 31.

Investigators have said that it was part of a series of violent robberies targeting vulnerable people.

Police previously said that a male was sleeping on a bench in that area when he was approached by an unknown number of suspects, and violently assaulted — unprovoked — by one of them who was armed with a hammer.''

''A 12-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man have been charged in a series of violent, unprovoked attacks targeting vulnerable members of the city, including one that left a 62-year-old man dead, Toronto police said.

All of the attacks occurred over a two-and-a-half hour period on the morning of Aug. 31 in Toronto’s downtown core. None of the victims knew the suspects prior to the assault, police added, describing all of the attacks as “unprovoked.”

“All of these attacks were extremely violent and they targeted vulnerable members of our city,” Det.- Sgt. Stacey McCabe said at a news conference on Monday, adding that three of the five victims were experiencing homelessness at the time they were assaulted.''

''As the suspects continued west on foot, they arrived at Nathan Phillips Square at around 6:08 a.m.
“It is here that they encountered a 62-year-old underhoused male sleeping on a bench. Unprovoked they began violently beating this male,” McCabe told reporters.
“Again, one of them (the suspects) was armed with a hammer.”
The man suffered serious injuries that ultimately led to his death days later on Sept. 4, police said.''

On Monday, September 15, 2025, Toronto Police announced the arrest of a 20-year-old man and a 12-year-old youth for second-degree murder in a homicide investigation involving a series of violent robberies.
'The victim has been identified as Joseph Eric Aubin, 62.
This was Toronto's 29th Homicide of 2025.
After exhaustive efforts, police are still unable to locate Mr. Aubin's next-of-kin to notify them of his passing. Police are seeking assistance from the public to locate next-of-kin for Mr. Aubin. Mr. Aubin went by the name 'Eric' and is believed to be from Quebec.

On Monday, September 15, 2025, the Toronto Police Service announced the arrest of a 20-year-old man and a 12-year-old youth in the homicide of Joseph Eric Aubin, 62.

Following extensive efforts, police were initially unable to locate Mr. Aubin’s next-of-kin and issued a public appeal. Mr. Aubin’s next-of-kin have now been located.
