''Kartik Vasudev hugged his parents goodbye at the airport in Delhi, India, in January, ready to embark on a flight to Toronto — he had studied hard for the chance to go to school in Canada.

“We were just crying with each other, hugging, my wife and my younger son,” remembered Jitesh Vasudev, Kartik’s father, speaking to the Star Friday. “But we were saying, ‘OK, he will come back soon.’”
“My son is not going to come back,” he said.
Kartik Vasudev, a 21-year-old international student, was shot and killed Thursday evening outside Sherbourne TTC subway station while on his way to the Mexican restaurant where he worked.''

“We have lost everything,” Jitesh Vasudev told the Star, speaking from the family’s home in Delhi. “He was just trying to fulfil his dreams, it was his dream to come to Canada.”

Kartik had made friends and had just gotten a part-time job at the Mexican restaurant just two weeks ago, Jitesh Vasudev said.''

“He was very polite, very sensitive, very loyal child. Everybody, family, friends, everybody loves him very much,” he said. “I don’t know what happened, but I’m trying to find out with the local police, please tell me what happened to my son.”

The last time he and his wife spoke to their son was Thursday afternoon, when Kartik was eating his lunch before he went to work. They heard Friday morning, local time, that Kartik’s manager had called his roommate because he had not shown up for his shift.''

Indian international student shot and killed in Toronto had dreamed of coming to Canada, father says | CTV News
“Why has this happened to him? I don’t know. Why he killed my innocent son, I just want to know,” Vasudev told CTV News Toronto on Saturday while fighting back tears. “If he wanted something from him, he could have snatched it. Why has he killed him? It’s a brutal murder.”

“He was shot six or seven times, that was very brutal. I just want to know what happened. What was the reason behind that?” Vasudev said, speaking from India.''

“He was loving this country and was saying that this was a very good country,” Vasudev said.

“We can’t even believe that this has happened to my son.”

A candlelight vigil is set to take place at Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday in Kartik’s memory. ''

Arrests made in separate fatal Toronto shootings | Toronto Sun

''Chief James Ramer is holding a press conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday at headquarters to release details.
On Thursday at 5 p.m., Seneca College student Kartik Vasudev, 21, was shot multiple times outside Sherbourne Station’s Glen Rd. entrance. He died in hospital.
Then on Saturday at 6:55 p.m. in the Dundas St. E. and George St. area, police say a man approached 36-year-old Elijah Eleazar Mahepath, of Toronto, and shot him multiple times. He too died in hospital.

Police make arrest in two seemingly random homicides, suggest suspect may have been planning other shootings | CP24.com

“We have nothing to suggest that he knew either one of them and what we believe, at this stage anyways, is that it was what we do describe as random. It was a chance meeting, a chance passing and for reasons that are only known to the suspect these two people were victimized on that day and now are dead,” Det. Sgt. Terry Browne told reporters during a news conference on Monday morning.

Police say they believe there were going to be more victims

Browne said that investigators were able to quickly link the two shootings “very early on” based on “the nature of the offences and how it was conducted.”

From there, he said that investigators used video surveillance footage to track the suspect “both from the area where he resides, to the area of the shooting and then back to his residence.”

The suspect was then arrested without incident at his residence in the Spadina Avenue and Bloor Street West area on Sunday night.

At the time of his arrest there were multiple loaded firearms found in the dwelling, including a rifle that Browne said was capable of “causing great carnage if used.”

“My personal opinion is there were going to be more victims,” Police Chief James Ramer said during the news conference. “When I don’t know. But he had an arsenal at home and quite frankly I believe this may have just been the first step.”
No criminal record
The suspect, identified as Richard Jonathan Edwin, has no criminal record and was the legal owner of the firearms found at his address.''

‘Complete stranger’ with cache of guns arrested in Toronto killings of international student and 35-year-old man, police say | The Star
''Given that he had already killed two apparent strangers, as we allege, and that a cache of firearms was located in his residence, we can reasonably conclude that the quick work of our investigators has prevented a further loss of life,” Ramer said.

Both Vasudev and Mahepath were shot and killed outside in the early evening hours last week.

According to Ramer, Vasudev was shot and killed in an “unprovoked” attack by a “complete stranger” outside Sherbourne subway station around 5 p.m. Thursday.''

Two days later, Mahepath was shot multiple times by an “apparent stranger” near Moss Park shortly before 7 p.m. on Saturday and later died in hospital.''

‘What was the next move?’ Man with legally owned ‘arsenal’ arrested in shocking downtown Toronto murders | The Star
''In both shootings, witnesses have told police there was no verbal communication “whatsoever,” Browne noted.
“It was what we do describe as random. It was a chance meeting, a chance passing. And for reasons that are only known to the suspect, these two people were victimized on that day, and now are dead,” Browne said.

Police believe a handgun was used in both killings, although investigators allege Edwin had a license for a “variety” of firearms, Browne said. Some of those “were very concerning to us, because of the potential — the potential — of what that weapon, or weapons, could do,” he added.

Hannah, who has lived in the Spadina apartment building for about three years, told the Star they’ve known Edwin since they moved into the red brick Victorian home, which is split into multiple apartment units.''

Victim's father pleading for answers as accused killer appears in court | CBC News
"There is a motive behind it, what was he thinking before the killings? We need to find out these questions," said Jitesh Vasudev, the father of 21-year-old Kartik Vasudev, who was fatally shot at Sherbourne subway station last Thursday.

"This is the answer we need to have."

Richard Jonathan Edwin, 39, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Vasudev and Elijah Eleazar Mahepath, who was shot last Saturday near the intersection of Dundas Street East and George Street, east of Jarvis Street.

Edwin briefly appeared in court by videoconference Wednesday morning. Court heard he has yet to retain a lawyer and will appear again Thursday. He spoke only to confirm his name.

Police say Edwin was arrested Sunday evening and had a cache of loaded guns within reach at the time of his arrest. Investigators have said they believe Edwin was a "complete stranger" to both men, who also didn't know each other.''

''Outside a memorial for Vasudev that was held at a funeral home in Etobicoke Wednesday, Nilay Goyal, a professor of finance at Seneca College, remembered the 21-year-old as quiet, shy, and one of the best students in his class.

"He was a brilliant one," Goyal said.

"It is just too sad to see that we will never know what came out of that brilliant mind and how he will affect the world."
