''The 25-year-old was out with three friends at the Keg Steakhouse & Bar in Langley on the evening of March 19, 2008, and was last seen walking to his vehicle, which was parked in the Colossus movie theatre parking lot nearby.

The case was taken over by IHIT a month after his disappearance, and police said they believed McElwee had met with foul play and were treating the case as a homicide.

Police said his grey 2006 Honda Civic was found a few days later parked on Halifax Street, not far from his apartment in Burnaby and had been driven by someone who used his keys. ''

''Lower Mainland homicide investigators are renewing an appeal for information in a cold case dating back 15 years.

Kellen McElwee was last seen on March 19, 2008, leaving the Keg Steakhouse & Bar at 9020 202 Avenue in Langley.''

''The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says McElwee’s vehicle, a grey four-door 2006 Honda Civic, was found parked in the 5100 block of Halifax Street six days after he vanished.''

''Homicide investigators took conduct of the case the following month, but McElwee’s remains have never been found.

“We’re asking anyone with new information or who has yet to speak with police to contact us,” IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Timothy Pierotti said.

“Fifteen years have passed and IHIT remain dedicated to Kellen’s family.”

''During the initial investigation, police also identified a person of interest who was seen in CCTV footage shot in McElwee’s apartment building at 4132 Halifax Street in Burnaby the night he disappeared.

Police have released images of a person of interest with a distinctive jacket in McElwee’s disappearance.

POI.
“We are hopeful that someone might recognize this person from the distinct Christian Audigier style, puffy jacket with fur around the hood,” Pierotti added. “We believe this person may have information that could help advance this investigation.”

''McElwee, who was 25 when he was last seen, would now be 40 years old. He is described as Caucasian, five-feet-10-inches tall and about 220 pounds with dirty blond hair and blue eyes.

He also has a black and white dragon tattoo below his let shoulder.''

''On the anniversary of the disappearance, IHIT released surveillance photos showing a person of interest in the case, and a jacket they were believed to be wearing.

The night he vanished, someone in a hooded winter jacket entered McElwee’s Burnaby apartment building. Their face is largely concealed by the jacket in the surveillance footage from in and around the building.

Anyone who knows something, and has not yet spoken to the police about this case, is being asked to call now, said Sgt. Timothy Pierotti, a spokesperson for IHIT.

In particular, they are hoping someone might recognize the person of interest based on their jacket.''

''Police have found no conclusive evidence he was ever connected to drugs or crime, and don’t believe McElwee ended his own life.

McElwee, who now would be 40-years old, was Caucasian and stood 5’10” tall, weighed about 220 lbs, and had dirty blond hair and blue eyes. He had a black and white dragon tattoo below his left shoulder.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.''

''The couple remember their son has having had a “normal” childhood that involved hockey and baseball. They described him as a “good student,” who “excelled in mathematics.''

“He had the widest smile and the kindest heart. He was very unassuming, but he had his own opinions and stood up for his beliefs,” the parents wrote. “Kellen was a driven and passionate young man when he was faced with a challenge or a friend needed help.”

But with no break in the case over the last decade, McElwee’s parents are pleading for any info that can at least help bring home his remains.''

“We would be eternally grateful if you are able to provide the police with any information,” the couple wrote, noting that no small piece of info is “irrelevant” and that tipsters can remain anonymous. “We are making this appeal particularly to those who knew Kellen and may have valuable information that can help the police solve his murder and find his remains. Kellen’s presence will always remain with family and friends. We hope this public plea will help bring Kellen and our family the justice he deserves.”

At the time of his disappearance, McElwee was wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, jeans and a brown leather jacket. He also had a black and white dragon tattoo near his left shoulder.

''The same day that Kellen McElwee vanished without a trace in 2008, he became the official owner of a 26th-floor apartment in Burnaby.
McElwee bought the condo for $675,000 by taking over the mortgage of two others for the unit at 4132 Halifax St., just north of the Lougheed Highway.''

''At the time, the two-bedroom, sub-penthouse suite was assessed at $535,000, according to property records obtained by Postmedia.

Why McElwee decided to pay so much more than the assessed value is one of the many unanswered questions swirling around the missing man, who is presumed to have met foul play on the night of March 19, 2008, after dining with friends at a Keg restaurant in Langley.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team recently renewed a public appeal for information about McElwee’s disappearance.''

Of particular interest to investigators is a mystery “person of interest” seen walking across the lobby of the Halifax Street condo building the night McElwee vanished.

“We are hopeful that someone might recognize this person from the distinct Christian Audigier-style, puffy jacket with fur around the hood. … We believe this person may have information that could help advance this investigation,” Pierotti said.

IHIT has never released a suspected motive in the case, although McElwee’s family has said repeatedly that the 25-year-old had no criminal record and was well-liked with many friends.

But suspicions about his finances were raised by two insurance companies in B.C. Supreme Court documents filed in 2011 when McElwee’s father Leonard petitioned to have his son declared dead.''

In his petition, the elder McElwee said that police received information in April 2008 that Kellen had been killed.

Manulife Financial’s response noted that that there “was virtually no evidence that Kellen met with fatal misadventure on March 19, 2008.” The court filing also said that at the time he disappeared that McElwee’s annual salary at a Roger’s Communication was $35,364.42, with a gross monthly income of $2,947.04. But the mortgage payments on his new condo were about $4,400 a month — almost 150 per cent more.''
