Club destroyed in Sunday night blaze

Thirty-six firefighters from Deep River and Laurentian Hills responded Sunday night as the clubhouse of the Deep River Lawn Bowling Club was destroyed in a fiery blaze. The fire began around 7:30 pm Sunday and by 8 pm the structure had been reduced to a charred shell. The cause of the fire was still under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal Monday. No one was hurt in the incident and crews from both departments worked quickly to keep the fire from spreading to the neighbouring Deep River Golf Club sheds.

"PARIS — Pentagon-supported physicists on Wednesday said they had devised a “time cloak” that briefly makes an event undetectable.

The laboratory device manipulates the flow of light in such a way that for the merest fraction of a second an event cannot be seen, according to a paper published in the science journal Nature.

It adds to experimental work in creating next-generation camouflage — a so-called invisibility cloak in which specific colours cannot be perceived by the human eye"

"The head of Canada's Nuclear Safety Commission calls two recent incidents at New Brunswick's Point Lepreau nuclear generating station are "unsettling."

On Dec. 13, there was a radioactive spill. Up to six litres of heavy water splashed to the floor, forcing an evacuation of the reactor building and halt of operations.

Then, on Dec. 14, NB Power issued a news release, admitting there had been another type of spill three weeks earlier. About 23 barrels of water laced with the toxic chemical hydrazine was released into the Bay of Fundy"

"Tehran – Iran said one of its nuclear scientists was killed on Wednesday by a magnet bomb fixed to his car by a motorcyclist and blamed Israel for the attack, intensifying diplomatic tensions the West over Tehran's nuclear program.

The bombing, which Iranian officials said bore all the hallmarks of assassinations of other nuclear scientists in the past years, came as Washington sought to persuade a skeptical China to help efforts to toughen sanctions against Iran.

Iran has blamed Israeli, British and U.S. intelligence for the attacks in the past, which it said were aimed at assassinating key people working on Iran's nuclear program. Both Israel and the United States have rejected the claims"

"The attack in Tehran bore a strong resemblance to earlier killings of scientists working on the Iranian nuclear program. It is certain to amplify authorities' claims of clandestine operations by Western powers and their allies to halt Iran's nuclear advances.

The blast killed Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a chemistry expert and a director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran, state TV reported. State news agency IRNA said Roshan had “organizational links” to Iran's nuclear agency, which suggests a direct role in key aspects of the program."

Absolutely heartbreaking!!!!! Where is the justice?!?!?!?

Lachlan,

There's no doubt, this planet lost an exceptional human being. I am certain your spirit lives on, tho never a replacement for such a shiney star.

Heartfelt thoughts go out to your loved ones ~ always ~ but especially this evening ~ RIP.

:rose: Gone but not forgotten! :rose:

It's officially two years since Lachlan put out his garbage and recycle box ( the wrong one) and went for a walk without his phone, GPS and flashlight, which by all accounts he just didn't do. He left his door unlocked and the lights on, which would suggest he didn't intend to be long. Every time I put out my recycle box I look over my shoulder, every time. And every time I think of Lachlan. It just doesn't add up for me and I think I will always wonder what really happened to my friend that I never actually met but came to respect and like very much. I hope his family and friends are well and have found some peace with his disappearance. Some of us will never stop trying to find out what really happened. RIP little man.

Thinking of Lachlan and wondering still what happened that strange evening.

Thought of Lachlan when I put up Christmas lights this year, and of course thinking of him today. There are some cases that we can never forget and LC sure is one of them.

To Lachlan's loved ones, I hope it is some comfort to know that your beloved LC is not forgotten, even by total strangers. He left huge footprints on our hearts.

Previously posted, but forever an honour.
http://www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/eng/news/cnbc/2010/11/12/cranswickite.html

"Lachlan Cranswick (1968-2010)

As a crystallographer and mineralogist, Lachlan specialized in applying neutron beams to the studies of materials science, structural chemistry, magnetism and geology. He assisted many scientists and students from universities across Canada and abroad to apply these scientific tools to advance their research programs. Lachlan Cranswick was passionate about ensuring access to the highest quality facilities for those scientists.

Mr. Cranswick’s accomplishments have been honoured in the naming of a new mineral, ‘cranswickite.’

Small deposits of cranswickite were found near Calingasta, Argentina while testing an instrument that is scheduled to be aboard the next NASA mission to Mars. Professor R.C. Peterson of Queen’s University analyzed samples and determined cranswickite to have the chemical composition MgSO4 · 4H2O with an atomic structure previously unobserved in nature."

http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2012/01/20/tech-robot-ottawa.html
"Canadian scientists are developing a robot that mimics the human face's expressions and human hand’s tactile processes, which they say will be useful in areas like nursing, nuclear plant maintenance, and explosive device disposal. It could even act as a companion.

Leadscientist Emil Petriu, a computer engineer at the University of Ottawa who has done work for the Canadian Space Agency, described his research in a phone interview with CBC News.

A key part of the technology is a new biology-inspired touch-sensitive artificial skin that is able to sense contact, as well as the profile, temperature and elasticity of object surfaces, ultimately raising the tactile sensitivity of robots to the human level. The artificial skin is made of elastic silicon and embedded with tactical and temperature sensors."

, next thing we know, the damn things will be going after our Canada Pension survivor benefits.

Hello old friends. I vowed to turn all this loose, but had no luck with that. Here are a couple of links that I think you may find interesting:

There was another sgt on the force when Lachlan went missing. His picture and name are no longer on the article at the last link. Seems he has gone. Constable Feris's picture is now in the position of the former sgt, and Feris is now a sgt.

The missing sgt's initials were RG and we followed his career pattern in earlier threads. He "retired" from OPP as of 02/28/2007 at which time his salary at OPP in 2007 was $4000 per year more than the police chief of DR. From OPP he was employed in security at CR until about 03/2009 at which time he took the position of sgt on the DR police force under the same Chief.

Can anyone learn why sgt RG's picture is missing from the current DR police lineup, and if so, when he left and for what reason? I can't turn up anything though have tried every search words I can think of.

Much food for thought here, huh?

I wonder, did LC request that his home be watched for the days he had taken off from work? If so, who was assigned to that duty? Lots more questions come to mind.

If anyone wishes, I'll post the links to the salary comparison info.

Most of you know that much of my work is not mine alone. Thanks, compadre.

Remember this older link?

"Another source of plenty of info regarding Cranswick is a thread on the site Websleuths, where amateur (or otherwise?) sleuths follow up leads or ideas and post their findings for all to see.

There is an amazing amount of info there about Cranswick, as well as fodder for any number of conspiracy theories you care to imagine, although objectively set out in most cases. In fact, much of the material originates on Cranswick's own website."
