''Police and volunteers are out for a second night searching for a vulnerable 70-year-old woman who went missing in Thornhill on Monday afternoon.
Lavene Gordon was last seen by her family in the area of Mullen Drive and Milner Gate at around 1 p.m. on Monday.''
York Regional Police said that Gordon was planning go for a walk at the time of her disappearance and may have been seen heading towards Bathurst Street by a passer-by at around 4 p.m. that afternoon.
Police told CP24 Tuesday that Gordon’s family reported her missing Monday evening at around 6 p.m.
“Family and us are quite concerned at this point for her wellbeing,” Staff Sgt. Mark Lau told CP24 at the scene. “So we're just appealing to the public; if anybody comes across her to please give us a call. They can call us directly at 911 or Crimestoppers.”
Police have set up a command post at Bathurst Street and Chabad Gate and are conducting a ground search of the surrounding neighbourhood.
Officers and volunteers fanned out in the area Tuesday night to try and locate the missing woman.
“As you see we have our command post here,” Lau said. “We also have quite a few ground searchers. We've deployed all our resources out doing the search.”
A police airplane also joined in the search during the day Tuesday.
''In a news release issued earlier, police said they believe Gordon may be lost but not asking for directions. They said they don't believe she had any money or identification on her when she left home.''
Gordon is described as Black, about five-foot-two, weighing 130 pounds. She has brown eyes and salt and pepper hair with slicked-back waves.
She is possibly wearing a black North Face jacket, black shoes and carrying a black purse.
Toronto police also issued a tweet about Gordon, as the area where she went missing is close to the Steeles Avenue border between Vaughan and Toronto.
“Please keep an eye out for Lavene Gordon, 70. She may be in the Bathurst St + Steeles Ave West area, in the City of Toronto,” Toronto police tweeted. “Any sightings of her, contact police.''
