Good question! I'm from the area.
I've never heard that anyone saw their car. That seems to me to have been a key strategy in their getting away with it..I think they might've left it on a side street a half block away.
It was almost dark when Lindsay was stabbed. So no one would likely see if there was any blood on them as they walked down Torquay. There'd have been light commuter traffic, not well lit.
IMO, the perps likely took the ferry back that night. They could just pay cash, unlike flights etc that require ID (and would've required them to get a ride from the crime scene).
It would have been a 1/2 drive to the ferry terminal, they would have known no one was following them.
The ferries carry hundreds of cars each. I guess it might have felt like a risk to them, but IMO they had no idea that Jason had been waiting outside. And surveillance cameras weren't a thing, yet. The internet shows that only started in a big way on the ferries in 2009, the year after this crime.

There are people arrested now, getting on or off the ferry, going either way. Only memorable case for me was a dramatic SWAT take-down of an armed and dangerous man escaping to the Island from the Vancouver side.
