I never considered it being a robbery. Gray Hughes said you can pick up an old van like that for a couple of hundred dollars. With Lucas having such long hair, he would have looked like a hippie. The fact that they were having a "picnic" at the side of the road doesn't exactly give an image of a young couple having much worth stealing.
But one might assume they have a sizeable amount of drugs worth a good chunk of change they could be transporting.

If the vehicle is stalled, what else are they supposed to do with it? Pick it up and move it off the road? What does Canada expect from their drivers? I think it’s universally understood that you need to move a vehicle as far off the roadway as possible when it is stalled, isn’t it?

Stalled vehicles must be off (towed if necessary) the highway, not partially on, to ensure the safety of other drivers. That's true of major highways in most countries.

A mechanic stopped to see if they needed help. That was an opportunity to ask the mechanic to either help, or call a tow truck (if cell service was unavailable). I understand that the couple expected that the van would cool off and be good to go, but that didn't happen if they were there from 3:20 until the evening. It's very unfortunate.

I believe it was the raised hood that caught the eye of local couple, and not that the van was seen as a road hazard.

I seriously doubt that the couple's van was an illegal impediment.

If true, I don't believe the local mechanic and his wife that stopped to offer assistance would have left them with their vehicle in that position.

Local couple also made no mention of such an important observation when interviewed. Just the opposite -- their opinion was LF had a mechanical understanding of the fix required, and no assistance required.

Local couple commented on the leisure attitude and surroundings of the couple where they were set up for lunch.

Mystery man could hold key to solving murder of Australian man and girlfriend in Canada
"Road worker Alandra Hull told 9News she saw Mr Fowler and Ms Deese on the highway the night before they were found dead, talking with a man who "kind of looked frustrated or something".
She said the man was standing in the middle of the highway, while Mr Fowler and Ms Deese stood beside their van.
"If you just get a bad feeling, and that's what I had, you just don't stop,"
she said.
The woman has given a statement to police and will work with a sketch artist to provide a composite of the man."

The night before Lucas Fowler and his gf were found dead beside their van, Alandra saw the couple in a heated exchange with a bearded man in the middle of the Alaska Highway. She says couple seemed bothered and mystery man had walked towards them from his grey car.@9NewsAUS

I do believe that these are actual photos from the scene when the bodies were found.

it is, we just don't know how manipulated these photos are vis've crime scene photo

those markers concern me and make me think my thoery from a couple of days a go could be correct

I do believe that these are actual photos from the scene when the bodies were found. In these photos, it's easier to see how far the van is onto the highway and how much room is left on the shoulder.

RCMP in British Columbia - Update: Suspicious Death Investigation Continues

If actual photos from the crime scene, I suspect the couple was driving when they were shot at from behind (shot out rear window) and were pulling off the road.

IMO, these photos don't depict the scene described by local couple that earlier had stopped to offer assistance to vehicle pulled over with raised hood.

We know that the RCMP did not drive the vehicle. They found and photographed the scene and then called a tow truck driver to move the van. The photo is authentic, and there's no reason for RCMP to manipulate a photo when the goal is to trigger memories of people who saw the van.

There was one photo posted earlier or in one of the videos with three evidence markers on the ground at the back of the van.

Any connection ?

i never make fun of anyone who contributes, i think anyone could help find a lead or a break or connection

this might be a little bit of a stretch though although i enjoyed reading it

for a killer to stay silent for 30 or more years and come out of the woodwork to return to killing would almost be unprecedented

The photo is authentic, and there's no reason for RCMP to manipulate a photo when the goal is to trigger

what i mean is they may have moved, closed or changed things within the scene to get a good photo of the van without showing anything graphic or conclusive to the case which they didnt want released
not that its been digitally manipulated

a crime scene photo is different in the fact most of the time they leave things untouched as pure as it can be for court cases or evidence

They were experienced travellers, but were they aware of, and did they abide by, local law? Maybe stalled vehicles in the USA and Australia can be partially parked on major highways and they didn't know better. I'm just speculating that an altercation may have started with someone stopping because of almost hitting the van - and things went south from there.

With the broken window, it seems like the suspect was determined to confront the couple.
I think here on US stalled vehicles absolutely are supposed to be out of the way. Once my dads car got stuck with a flat in the divider part between freeway and on ramp and a policeman used his car to move it out of the way.

The way their vehicle is causing that lane to become smaller seems quite dangerous. Shame no one could help get it out of the way.

They were not driving as the van was stopped and stalled when the eye witness saw them talking to an aggravated man. The photos are from the RCMP website, one photo has crime scene tape. If the couple decided to camp there overnight, they could have closed the engine hood. The van was described as having a broken rear window and the side doors open. The side doors are open in the photo.

IF the van had been causing an obstruction on the roadway, it would make sense that the woman who called police the day before would have reported this. And had that been the case, police would likely have checked the situation out. They did not.

It's possible the man who argued with them isnt even the killer. But hopefully he is. But hard to think someone broke the window, shot them, moved the bodies then grabbed any non hidden IDs in broad daylight. Wish we knew what time the lady who saw the man arguing with them was.

In Canada, as with most countries, stalled vehicles have to be entirely off the highway for the safety of others.

It's not a reason to be shot, but I can understand that if someone was driving at dusk and there was oncoming traffic at the time the suspect passed the van, it would be risky to brake hard or swerve.

In the news video where they were interviewing the two road workers out on the highway, the narrating reporter used words to the effect of her seeing a man on the road with the couple the previous night. However with sunset being past 10pm, depending on what time this was exactly it may have still been quite light.

With the mountains, it could be light, but not daylight. Hard to explain, but I camped in the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia one summer and it was never fully dark at night. It was like a long dusk and then daylight again.

Personally, I think it was road rage. If travelling at night or even in the day and a big rig is on the other side of the road and a van was partly out on the road, I certainly would be very annoyed. However, the victims did not deserve their fate regardless of the reasoning for their death.

Yikes. Theres road rage and theres "take the lives of others rage

I do too but cant assume anything, too bizarre.

And ia, id probably honk or if i had to do some swerving, roll a windoe down and yell. I can totally see someone with little emotional control escalating. How horrifying.

Unless they were in prison (in Canada or elsewhere), maybe even on unrelated charges.

Or they could be a BTK type.

BBM Interesting, makes you wonder if where the van was found was where the couple spotted them the day before?
