Here are links to webcams that are along the northern part of B.C. Highway 97, including the Liard Hwy Junction, Hwy 97 - Hwy 77 junction. There's a handy little map to show you exactly where the cam is. I think that they give an idea of how little traffic goes along this highway.
It's about 4:00p.m., Sunday afternoon, and pretty much all the roads are empty.
It also suggests that there might be a paved shoulder on the roadsides, with, or without painted road markings. So it's not clear to me that they were actually parked partly on the road. They may have been on the paved shoulder.
You can also replay the last 24 hrs and see when darkness falls and the new day begins.

Thanks for that link. I see what you're referring to: the shoulder of the road is paved, with gravel alongside. Lucas had parked on the shoulder, the van wasn't partially in the roadway. If he had been on the roadway, the white shoulder line would be visible under the car.

If the black bearded man was angry at them, it must have been about something else. Maybe mentally ill or high? Poor kids, they must have been terrified and were probably hoping another car would come along.
