McCann sympathizes with family of missing B.C. couple

McCann, whose parents Lyle and Marie of St. Albert (below) have been missing since last summer, understands this is a very hard time for the Chretien family.

"It's just terrible -- the worst place to put a family in I think," he says. "I really feel sympathy for the family of this couple."

Regarding his parents, McCann says he met with investigators three weeks ago. He says they are waiting for some forensic evidence to be analyzed.

A $60,000 reward is still being offered to anyone who comes forward with information that will help find the McCanns.

A medical examiner performed autopsies on two bodies Thursday, one day after a man out four-wheeling on the western fringe of Edmonton stumbled across the remains.

Bodies found not McCanns
When news came across the wire that two bodies had been found on the western of Edmonton, Bret McCann was of two minds.
McCann’s parents, Lyle and Marie, have been missing since July 2010. They were last seen fuelling up their motorhome at the Superstore gas bar on St. Albert Trail, heading out to meet their daughter in British Columbia. But they never arrived, and their burned-out RV was found near Edson a couple of days later.
So, when the discovery was made near 215 Street and Stony Plain Road, it made for som anxious moments for McCann and his family.

Missing seniors cases baffling

It’s been almost one year since an Edmonton senior couple vanished and family members want the nightmare to come to a close.

Bret McCann, son of Lyle, 78, and Marie McCann, 72, who went missing last July said the family is trying to be patient and working closely with police, but remaining patient is becoming difficult.

“It’s difficult knowing that something happened to my parents, but not knowing what it is – there’s no closure,” said Bret. “It’s been a nightmare but we have to be patient. We don’t have a choice.”

Campers discover two human skulls near Grande Prairie

Campers investigating a rotten smell on the long weekend stumbled across two human skulls and another bone, all partially buried under leaves near Grand Prairie, Alta.

Police aren't saying anything about the age and gender of the remains, but RCMP spokesman Sgt. Tim Taniguchi said they are not believed to be Lyle and Marie McCann, a couple from the Edmonton bedroom community St. Albert of missing since last July and presumed dead.

On May 21, two campers happened upon two skulls on Forestry Trunk Road south of the Simonette River.

McCann was contacted within hours of the grisly discovery, and by Tuesday RCMP had determined the human remains do not belong to his parents, he says.

&#8220;On Sunday they phoned, and said an anthropologist had determined the skulls belong to people much younger than my parents,&#8221; said McCann. &#8220;Tuesday, they
called and confirmed it isn&#8217;t them.&#8221;

&#8220;The police are really good about letting us know about these things in advance,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think this time it was different because it&#8217;s two people. You don&#8217;t often find two skulls like that.&#8221;

The family continues to hold out hope that a witness will come out of the woodwork.

&#8220;I&#8217;m hoping this reminds people that my parents are still out there,&#8221; he said. &#8220;With summer back, people will be out camping and I&#8217;d like to remind them to just keep an eye out.&#8221;

A $60,000 reward is still in effect for anyone with information that will lead McCann to his parents.

McCann worked with Crimestoppers on Friday to produce a video about his parents.

He hopes it will trigger a memory, and somebody, somewhere, will come forward.

The video is expected to air sometime in late June, to coincide with the one-year anniversary of his parent&#8217;s disappearance.

Grande Prairie RCMP are still investigating the scene where the two skulls were found.

The remains have been sent to the medical examiner&#8217;s office for further identification, according to police.

UPDATE regarding the discovery of two human skulls near Grande Prairie

One of two skulls found near Grande Prairie is that of 19-year-old Rene Lynn Gunning, missing along with her 16-year-old friend Krystle Ann Julie Knott, since 2005. Police say the whereabouts of Knott is still unknown.

The second skull found May 21 by campers 60 km south of Grande Prairie on the Forestry Trunk Road has not yet been positively identified, say RCMP.

Travis Vader exits a Mayerthorpe courthouse on May 31, 2011​

Travis Vader answered to 13 charges, from arson to theft over $5,000 in a Mayerthorpe courtroom Tuesday. A preliminary hearing was held on charges unrelated to the couple.

He's never been charged in connection to the McCanns' disappearance, only named a suspect.

Alberta Sheriffs brought Vader to court under high security. His ankles were shackled and the prisoner van was parked very close to the courthouse to limit his chance of escaping.

Search continues for missing couple
As the one year anniversary of the disappearance of an elderly St. Albert couple looms, RCMP and other search and rescue personnel are picking up the search for Lyle and Marie McCann.
The couple disappeared July 3, 2010, after leaving in their RV to visit friends in British Columbia.
Their motorhome was found burned on July 5, and the vehicle they were towing was found abandoned four days later.
The only person of interest in the case, Travis Vader, is currently behind bars on unrelated charges.

Search continues nearly one year later
It's been almost a year since the disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann, who were last seen gassing up in St. Albert in early July. Their burned out motorhome was found a couple days later southeast of Edson, on a site near Lodgepole, Alberta. That's where a civilian crew focused their search efforts on Sunday, spending the day navigating the rough terrain on quads and foot, looking for anything out of the ordinary.

Members of the family of a St. Albert couple missing for almost a year say they have been briefed by RCMP following another search.

The latest search for Lyle and Marie McCann took place in dense bush in a remote area near Lodgepole, southwest of Drayton Valley, this past weekend.

"They said that they've done four searches in the last few weeks and didn't tell us what came of it -- they don't fill us in on the details," said Bret McCann.

Bret McCann said the officer who briefed him described the investigation as painstakingly slow and very high tech.

"But he said the investigation is still promising, which we found quite reassuring," said McCann.

Police believe the couple met with foul play and have identified a number of persons of interest, which Taniguchi said could mean witnesses or a person that has some association to the investigation.

One of the biggest challenges investigators face is the large area involved in the search, along with the fact the McCann's RV -- the centre of the crime scene -- was reduced to a pile of charred remains, added Taniguchi.

"The investigation is not typical. The circumstances are unique and we understand the investigation has caught the attention of Alberta and beyond," said Taniguchi. "We tenaciously invest in this file and we continue to invest in it and make progress."

For the McCann family, the last year has been a nightmare.
