Man says he was 'nearly beat to death' during violent homophobic assault at Toronto Island

''According to Toronto police, the man and a 27-year-old woman were walking in the area when they became involved in a disagreement with a group of people.

A man from the group made homophobic comments towards the victims while a woman grabbed one of them, police said.

The 24-year-old was then assaulted by two men from the group, police allege. Investigators say the suspects punched and kicked him, leaving him with “significant injuries.”

''Gomez says he was called homophobic names and was subsequently “knocked unconscious, and nearly beat to death … I was dragged around, kicked and punched in the face.”

He wrote that he has a broken nose and shattered face, and went on to thank everyone who has reached out with flowers, food and support.''

''Pride Toronto’s Executive Director Sherwin Modeste told CTV News Toronto Wednesday the community is feeling fear.
“It is very disheartening that in 2021 we’re still facing this sort of attack. Yesterday and the day before our social media, our phone calls were ringing off the hook, just individuals not feeling safe,” he said.
Modeste is calling on Toronto police to investigate the assault as a hate crime.''

''The first suspect is described by police as a Black man who is about 25 to 32 years old. He stands about six-foot-four, weighs about 220 pounds and has a muscular build with dreadlocks. The suspect had a bicycle with him.

The second suspect is described as a white man with a thin build who was about five-foot-six inches tall. He possibly had dreadlocks, police say.

The third suspect is described as a white woman who is about 22 to 28 years old. She stands about five-foot-five, weighs about 190 pounds and has long blonde hair.''

''Meanwhile, several social media posts have linked an Ottawa Redblacks player to the attack.

The CFL team released a statement saying "aware of the allegations made on social media involving one of their players."

CFL, Redblacks weigh in on Chris Larson suspension | Toronto Sun
''The CFL and Ottawa Redblacks have now both weighed in on accusations that one of their players allegedly took part in a brutal beating that Toronto Police say was motivated by homophobia.

Chris Larsen — a 25 year old defensive lineman — is among three suspects wanted by police in connection with the Saturday night incident near the Hanlan’s Point ferry dock.''

“The CFL is aware of violence against a LGBTQ2S+ community member, and the allegation that has been made against Chris Larsen, an Ottawa REDBLACKS player.”

In announcing his suspension the team said “We are particularly sorry for the trauma caused to the 2SLGBTQ+ community.”

Police plead with witnesses to come forward after violent, homophobic assault at Toronto Island
''Despite widespread media attention, police say they are still looking for individuals who witnessed a violent and allegedly homophobic assault on a 24-year-old man at the Toronto Island.''

“I’d implore anyone who has photos, videos, or may have seen anything to please contact us. Even if you think what you saw is irrelevant, tell us anyway,” Det.Cons. Lauren Hassard said in a news release issued Monday afternoon. “The smallest piece of information could be key to this investigation.”

Police are asking anyone who may have been near the docks between 10 p.m. and midnight, or who may have witnessed the assault or the lead up to it, to contact investigators.''

''In her statement, Hassard said the investigation into the assault was “complex” and involved multiple people.

“I want to assure everyone that we are doing everything possible to ascertain exactly what happened,” she said. “We have to be sure we carry out a thorough investigation, establishing the full facts with evidence to support it.”

These men are insecure in their own sexuality to incite that much rage IMO.

“At most, he might be a witness.”

“He’s just happy that he has cleared his name on all fronts,” said Chris Larsen’s lawyer and former crown prosecutor Calvin Barry in an interview.

Man arrested in violent, homophobic attack at Toronto Island
''A man has been arrested in connection with a violent, homophobic assault on Toronto Island that left a man with significant injuries earlier this month, Toronto police say.

Twenty-four-year-old Elijah McGibbon, from Toronto, faces an aggravated assault charge after the June 5 attack near Hanlan’s Point.

According to police, the incident happened at the ferry docks on the Island at around 11:30 p.m.''

''A week after the incident, Gomez told CTV News Toronto that he was still in a lot of pain and struggling to go outside.

“I’m scared to leave my home,” he told CTV News Toronto on Monday. “It’s been several days since. I only go to and from the hospital now.”

''Police said the investigation is still ongoing.

“I want to make it clear that while we have successfully charged someone for their alleged involvement in this assault, our investigation does not stop here,” Det. Const. Lauren Hassard said in a statement.

“This is a complex case and we still encourage witnesses to come forward. In particular, we want to speak to two women who we believe were in the area at the time and are described as white, in their 20s and with brown hair,” she added.''

This brings me to tears. Is this not 2021? I hope this McGibbon gives up the tapes on every person that was with him.

I'm old. I witnessed horrible hate. Had to watch dear friends and loved ones hide their sexual preference. Still today young folks question this. Yes, yes, yes, yes you can be in danger for living your best life. It has to end.

Hoping Mr. Gomez is feeling better, but that fear? Nobody should have to live like that for any reason. Let alone who they choose to share their life with.
