GUILTY Canada - Man, 26, beaten, tortured, starved, Regina, Sask, 16 April 2010

I don't understand either. It must be weak Canadian MP that doesn't figure out about the beat/torture victim which is long time to heal. They need to arrest Dustin Paxton for his cruel actions.

I thought this guy might be in hiding, but is it really that they just haven't taken the initiative to talk to him? That just seems like an extreme dereliction of duty on the part of the RCMP.

TY Reen. Any idea what he was on teh Crimestoppers most wanted list for? Wondering if it was a violent crime and if his criminal history contains a pattern of escalating violence.

No, I haven't been able to find that out. You'd think it would pop up on search engines right up top as it was a...um...MOST WANTED case just 3 years ago. So I'm half-doubting that piece of information at this point.

I'm a new poster, and just noticed this thread as it popped up with new activity today. Feel free to call me crazy, but I'm getting a very "Zanny the Nanny" feel about this Dustin Paxton. Am I the only one?

Dustin L's ex-girlfriend has met Paxton, and has admitted to sleeping with him. So we at least know that he's a real person.

Well that's a huge difference then. What a baffling case! I definitely hope his family is on the up-and-up, but these days... oi vey!

I agree, nerdy! This is a really baffling case. I keep checking back to see if anything new is uncovered. What happened to Dustin is so horrific I want to see the person responsible face justice.

There is a support page on Facebook set up by his family, and one set up by the ex-girlfriend. No new news there either. :(

Which begs the question - who then, did subject this young man to these horrific injuries?

Admittedly I did not mentally travel far down that road yet. I had this horrible gut feeling that maybe a family member was exploiting him for financial gain and/or sympathy/attention. Munchausen-by-proxy type of thing, except that would seem so much more likely with a younger victim.

Understanding that Canadien investigations are kept more under wraps makes me think we're just not privy to updates. If it is tied to gangs or organized crime - there may be a very good reason no developments have been announced.

I just find this whole case and the seeming inactivity baffling. Could just be the diferences in US vs Canadian LE practices tho.

So how about this for random, totally-uneducated-opinion:

Dustin & Dustin are partners. Dustin L. has a drug problem, and this is why he has lost so much weight and his appearance is so haggard. They have some really shady connections and Dustin L. has gotten beaten up on occasion (the previous hospital visit.) Since it's drug-related, he's going to have a cover story.

On the fateful night, Dustin L. is beaten near-death, and Dustin P. drops him off to get help so he won't die - and takes off to save his own butt, knowing that whomever got Dustin L. will be after him, too.

Perhaps the family either truly believes Dustin P. is to blame, or want to pin it on him due to not accepting their son/brother is gay. They want Dustin to get the best care and those responsible brought to justice - but might be hiding a few things about him to enhance his public "image."

What I can't necessarily place in this hypothesis is the noises heard by the neighbors. And of course not to overlook the testimony, but my gut says it's not the instigating event here.

There's a blog out there with some interesting comments - but I can't recall if linking to blogs is acceptable or not. I googled "Dustin Paxton" and did some reading on the top hits.

(Everything in this post is OPINION.)

ETA: I guess I didn't really need to quote you on that, tlcox, but I'm still learning the ways around here. :)

As far as we know, Dustin did not do drugs besides occasional marijuana. This is according to the ex girlfriend and the hospital toxicology report (which showed no drugs or alcohol at all).

And if Paxton was worried about someone coming to "get" him after dropping Dustin at the hospital, why did he stick around at the apartment for a month (neighbors saw him) before taking off?

Also the neighbor recorded one of the beatings and it was Paxton screaming at Dustin, no one else. It is hard to know WHY he did this, or why the police don't have him and waited until he fled to put out a warrant, but I am 99% convinced it was him alone.

Can someone explain to me why the ex-girlfriend didn't go to police when she found out Dustin was being abused? Instead, she waits for him to show up in a hospital, and then says something. Makes no sense to me.

I must have missed that there was a recording, but nonetheless I believe the witnesses anyway. I wouldn't entirely dismiss the idea of it being sexual in nature, but the simplest explanation is usually best. This one has all the intrigue of a hollywood film, but true crimes are usually KISS. I'm inclined to think you are right, but my imagination keeps going "No!!! There's more!!!"

The toxicology report, as long as I'm not mistaken, has only been mentioned on the family run website with no real hospital documentation (scan of actual report).

Something is missing and in most Canadian major crime cases, the police don't say much while investigating, it is a lot different from the USA who have Nancy Grace and Larry King.

Brother of tortured man searches for answers

A Nanaimo man is appealing to the public through online social media to understand why his brother was held captive and tortured for at least two months earlier this year.

Ryan LaFortune, 32, told the News Bulletin he and his family, frustrated at the pace of investigation set by police, are lobbying the public for information, trying to determine why Dustin LaFortune, 26, was tortured and starved to near death.

Dustin LaFortune was dropped off at a Regina hospital in mid-April with injuries that included a severed lower lip, partially cut out tongue, burns, stab wounds, broken bones over recently healed bones, brain trauma and weight loss from 250 pounds to 90 pounds.

“Dustin has told Regina police who did this to him,” said Ryan LaFortune. “From our point of view, it’s hard to understand why something hasn’t been done

Website keeps public updated on LaFortune's progress

A website is keeping the public up to date with the progress of Dustin LaFortune, who was dropped off at the Regina General Hospital nearly two months ago.

The website is run by Jodie Gastel, a family friend from Victoria, B.C. There are regular messages left by family members about what kind of person Dustin is.

They also provide detailed information and pictures about the injuries he suffered and is recovering from. According to the family, Dustin can now get out of bed with help.

The family also included what doctors told them Dustin’s rehab will entail and what level of recovery they can expect. There are also updated photos which still show a frail looking LaFortune.

Gastel said the public was asking for information on Dustin’s progress, and that’s how the website began. She got permission from Dustin’s mother Renee and his brother Ryan.

Dustin LaFortune's struggle an inspiration to speak out against violence
By PAMELA ROTH, Leader-Post June 11, 2010

REGINA — Jerry Tomljenovic has never met Dustin LaFortune or any members of his family.

But when the 19-year-old Regina resident heard the grisly story of how LaFortune was dropped off at a Regina hospital, clinging to life after he was reportedly tortured, beaten and starved, Tomljenovic felt compelled to show his support.

"When I first heard about it I was shocked," said Tomljenovic. "Now that I see he's alive, doing well and getting better, I find that kind of inspirational for me. Not to many people have the strength inside to survive something like that."

A Facebook group set up in support of LaFortune following his arrival at the hospital now has more than 43,000 members, including Tomljenovic
