Tortured man's slow steady recovery lined with bumps

REGINA — A Winnipeg man who was tortured and dumped at a Regina hospital is said to be making slow but steady progress.

Dustin LaFortune was emaciated, burned and had parts of his tongue and lips cut off when he was left at the hospital in mid-April. His brother, Ryan, says Dustin likely won't make a 100 per cent recovery.

"After some surgeries -- and he'll need a lot of corrective surgeries -- he'll be able to walk and he'll be able to do all that maybe with a slight limp. He'll have some facial scarring and some things like that, but we're all more worried about the trauma and the mental acuity at this point," Ryan LaFortune said Sunday.

"Because he has an acquired brain injury, he could be a 100 per cent tomorrow or he could never be the same man again."

The LaFortune family says Dustin also appears to be suffering from retrograde amnesia -- a specific type of memory loss brought on by trauma and which wipes out recollections of the time leading up to the trauma.

Emaciated man on mend — at least physically — brother tells marchers

REGINA — Several dozen supporters of Dustin LaFortune gathered in Regina on Saturday and his brother, Ryan LaFortune, spoke about Dustin’s condition.

“We’re worried about him,” Ryan, 32, said. “We want to keep the hope that he just keeps his progress going slow and steady.”

The story of Dustin, a robust man of 26, has made headlines. On April 16, Dustin — who is from Winnipeg but had been living in Calgary — was mysteriously dropped off at Regina’s General Hospital, reportedly weighing only 90 pounds and with extensive injuries.

“He’s starting to look a lot better than when he came in,” his brother said Saturday. “He’s eating food now, so that hopefully will put weight on him.”

But he’s still not even half the man he once was in terms of size — that’s literal.

I've been checking on it daily too. Nothing. Even the family took down the discussion part of the FB page, and the only mention of Paxton's name anymore is the "wanted" poster image. I imagine LE made them do that, because the family REALLY wants this guy found - that's the reason for the FB page to begin with.

I have seen Canadian police work extremely fast in many cases...so what's going on here that we don't know??

Can someone explain to me why the ex-girlfriend didn't go to police when she found out Dustin was being abused? Instead, she waits for him to show up in a hospital, and then says something. Makes no sense to me.

What grown man would allow another grown man to abuse him, as explained by the ex-girlfriend? Unless, they were in some sort of homosexual relationship maybe?

I just don't understand why this took so long. Dustin Lafortune has been horribly abused by him. I don't know that he'll ever fully recover. What this guy did is unspeakable.

I certainly hope he is caught. I would like to see justice for Dustin.

Tonight, police have a Canada Wide Arrest Warrant for 30-year-old Dustin Ward Paxton.


Paxton is white, about 5' 9" and weighs about 160 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.


Police say he may have altered his appearance.


Paxton faces two counts of aggravated assault, forcible confinement, and sexual assault.

Charges in connection to severe assault case

Regina police obtained a warrant on the charge of aggravated assault that allegedly happened in Regina between March 15 and April 16, 2010 later in the day Monday, before that news conference was held. Popowich said a large part of the reason it took four months for the charge to be laid lies in the fact that the victim suffered minor brain damage as a result of the beating. It took weeks in hospital before he was healthy enough to even talk to police and even then he had difficulty remembering what had happened to him. He continues to receive daily therapy as he tries to recover.

The Regina Police Service's Elizabeth Popowich says even the slightest tip could push the investigation into high-gear, and hopes that releasing information about Paxton will help make that happen. "Now that that process has been enacted and the public is now involved, I expect that that will generate some follow-ups and some tips and some leads."

She adds it's only a matter of time until someone sees Paxton, and the arrest is made. "It actually is pretty hard for a person to disappear completely and live off the grid, so to speak."

Popowich believes that things like Crime Stoppers are great for providing investigators with invaluable tips.

CALGARY — He was badly beaten, emaciated and barely recognizable with parts of his tongue and lower lip missing. Now police are saying the former Calgary man dumped outside a Regina hospital in April was held against his will and sexually assaulted during a two-year-period he lived with a friend.
