Family of Marcus McKay marks 20 years since his disappearance

July 15, 2020

WINNIPEG -- A Manitoba family is marking a grim anniversary as it has been 20 years since eight-year-old Marcus McKay disappeared.

A rescue operation was launched in 2000 after he went missing on July 15, 2000, near the town of Mallard, Man.

The family was hunting in the area and had just shot a deer. Marcus was waiting by the deer while a family member went to get the rest of the hunting party.

By the time they got back, Marcus was gone.

Investigators have never been able to find him and he is presumed dead.

Pearl Dumas is McKay's grandmother and said his disappearance has been very tough on her family.

"Sometimes we cry. Sometimes we laugh," she said. "We always wonder what he would have been if he had grown up to be a man today."

Dumas said Marcus was an angelic kid and he always loved playing with marbles.

She said she remembers the last time she saw him, saying he gave her the biggest hug that day. A month later, he disappeared.

"I never even thought that would be my last time that I'd seen him."

Dumas said the family would go search the area for a few years after he disappeared, but since then there haven't been any searches. She added that for her and her husband, it is too hard for them to go back to that area.

Since he disappeared, she said her family comes together every year on the day that he disappeared and they have a big feast to honour him.

"We cook and we go out in the bush and we do our meal there and we always make a plate for him," she said.

She added that she never thought she would have to go 20 years without finding him.

Dumas said a day doesn't go by that she doesn't think about him and she hopes that one day he is found so the family can give him a proper burial.

GRIEVING AFTER 20 YEARS

Lindsay Lobb with missingkids.ca said hitting these milestones can be hard. She said every family in a situation like this can have different experiences.

"These families have to go through Christmas and Birthdays and summer vacations without ever having the presence of Marcus with them and I think that really complicates the ability to celebrate some of these different family events," said Lobb.

She said there are pieces of information out there that could possibly help locate Marcus.

"We really need people to come forward to report that information, whether it be to police or our website."

She said for those who report information online, it is done anonymously and the information is forwarded to the investigating agency.

''In March of 2021, the Métis federation announced a $1-million fund to help families find missing and murdered loved ones. Called Pey Key Way Ta Hin/Bring Me Home, the fund provides individual $10,000 rewards for information that leads to locating missing loved ones.
''The Manitoba Métis Federation has unveiled a billboard seeking information into the case of Marcus McKay, who vanished on a hunting trip near Mallard, Man. 23 years ago.

His spirit names are North Wind Man and Two Feathers. He was just eight when he went missing.

“Having no answers about what happened to Marcus continues to hurt the family and our community,” said Frances Chartrand, vice-president of the MMF’s Northwest Region.

“Communicating this reward and prominently displaying Marcus’ face near the place he was last seen reminds everyone that we have not forgotten him, and we have not forgotten the family’s pain.”

“The investigation into the disappearance of Marcus McKay is ongoing, and (investigators) are dedicated to finding out what happened to him,” Courchaine said.

“Every tip is investigated and if anyone has information on Marcus, they are asked to call and report it to police.”

"We're going to try and have billboards across the province of Manitoba, to make sure that our citizens and their families are reunited," said Frances Chartrand, vice president of the federation's Northern Metism Council.

Chartrand was in Mallard on the day McKay went missing, helping with the massive search effort. "We went out there, helped look, and the RCMP came down, the army came down, we had hundreds of volunteers that went walking through the bush to try and find out where he was," said Chartrand.

The Mounties, the Army, the Métis Council, hundreds of volunteers all walking through the bush. I can see why the Police haven’t ruled out foul play. I’m glad they’re putting up billboards with a close up of handsome Marcus’ smiling, happy face, the reward prominently mentioned. Situations and relationships change over time, thinking back, from a different point of view, might trigger something.

Well, I know what I think happened to him, but what seems to be lacking is any evidence. It’s worth trying a reward.

My immediate opinion-shot by accident (or purposely) and buried.

Thank you, you know that never even occurred to me! Never been hunting so I don't know how possible this would be as a scenario?

I'm sorry, but who the hell leaves an eight year old alone in the middle of the woods, with a dead deer, for over an hour? I wonder how thoroughly they investigated the stepfather, and if there was motive.

Couple of theories...

1. He wandered off, got lost, and subsequently succumbed to the elements.

2. He was attacked by a wild animal.

3. Stepfather had planned to kill him, and did it before meeting the other hunters. Planned the story ahead of time. Brought a shovel with him, but buried it along with the body.

4. Stepfather accidentally shot him, got scared, and concocted the story on a whim. But where would he hide the body in that time span?

I'm kind of leaning towards the stepfather being negligent and leaving Marcus alone (very irresponsible) in the woods. Marcus probably got bored of sitting there, and decided to head back in the same direction as his stepfather, but got lost.
