''Quebec provincial police declared the decades-old murder of 10-year-old Marie-Chantale Desjardins solved on Tuesday, saying advanced forensic biology methods have resulted in a murder charge for a 61-year-old inmate of a prison north of Mont-Tremblant, Que.

Réal Courtemanche, 61, was arrested this morning at La Macaza Institution, a federal medium-security prison, and was charged with first-degree murder today in a court in Saint-Jérôme, Que.

Desjardins was last seen alive leaving a friend's house in Sainte-Thérèse, a suburb on Montreal's north shore, on July 16, 1994. Her body was found four days later in the neighbouring town of Rosemère, in a wooded area behind the Place Rosemère shopping centre.''

"In the document outlining the dangerous offender decision, Trudel noted that prior to the convictions for the Princeville kidnapping, Courtemanche had been convicted of 89 criminal offences since 1981, including 11 "involving the use of violence."

"The next court date has been set for Jan. 17, Baribeau said.'''

''Courtemanche appeared before a judge Tuesday afternoon in St-Jérôme, Que., northwest of Montreal. Donning a large, wooden crucifix around his neck, Courtemanche shook his head when the charge was read. He pleaded not guilty.''

''Marie-Chantale’s family members were in the courtroom for the brief appearance. Among them was Sylvie Desjardins, the victim’s mother.''

''Courtemanche has been convicted of 89 criminal offences since 1981. In 2015, he was declared a dangerous offender and given an indeterminate sentence — which has no set end date — after his conviction for kidnapping a woman and assaulting her with a knife.

The accused’s next appearance in court is set for Jan. 17, 2024. Courtemanche’s legal aid lawyer said his client requested to stay at the same prison for safety reasons, given the nature of the charge.''

Joleil and Marie-Eve were probably his victims too IMO

he admitted to it!

A Quebec man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the killing of a 10-year-old girl in a northern Montreal suburb more than 31 years ago, bringing closure to the young victim's family.

Réal Courtemanche, 62, already in prison for other crimes, admitted Friday that the evidence in the case proves beyond a reasonable doubt that he murdered Marie-Chantale Desjardins.

''A Quebec man who was convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of a 10-year-old girl north of Montreal in 1994 has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Superior Court Justice Hélène Di Salvo said today in St-Jerôme, Que., that Réal Courtemanche has not shown any remorse and there’s no hope for his rehabilitation.''

''The judge noted he has committed at least 86 criminal infractions and was declared a dangerous offender in 2015 after he was convicted of kidnapping a woman and assaulting her with a knife.''
