I have not looked at this in depth but my understanding is he boarded the train in Sault Ste. Marie and was on his way to Hawk Junction. I understand the train stopped at mile marker 122 and he was said to be seen at around mile marker 155 in Perry. I have yet to find a map for 1959 but here are the mile markers and route for 1969 to give us a clearer idea of where his possible journey and the area they were searching for him through which the Michipcoten RIver runs. Here is the link where I obtained the clip Algoma Central Railway: Map, Logo, Timetable, Rosters

So it looks like he may have still had to walk about 70 km from where he missed the train at mile marker 122 to Hawk Junction, which would take over 16 hours! (I have compared the 1969 route to the Trans Canada trail on Google Maps today, estimating where it looks he may have missed train on the google map). The x marks approximately where Perry was at the time and according to Google Maps from Perry to Hawk Junction he only had about 30 km (6 hours left) of walking when he went missing.
