'IQALUIT — Mounties in Nunavut have made an arrest in the murder of a 15-year-old girl almost 40 years ago. Mary Ann Birmingham was found dead in Frobisher Bay in what was then the Northwest Territories in May of 1986.'

''RCMP have said Birmingham was "brutally murdered" in her home while her family was out of town.
Police say she was found by her sister, Barbara Sevigny, who had just returned from visiting her brother in Montreal. The front door to the house was locked, and she had to pry open a window with a makeup compact.''

''The homicide of 15-year-old Mary Ann Birmingham, killed in her home in Iqaluit in 1986, went unsolved for over three decades. But on Sept. 25, Jopey Atsiqtaq appeared in court to face a charge of second-degree murder in the teen’s death.

That day would mark the second time Atsiqtaq was charged with Birmingham’s murder. The previous charge was dropped after a preliminary hearing.''
' Atsiqtaq’s next court date is Feb. 11.''

Second link indicates he’s done time for second degree murder in the past.

Second link indicates he’s done time for second degree murder in the past.

According to reporting from Nunatsiaq News, Atsiqtaq was previously convicted of the murders of Pootoogoo Eyesiak, 21, and his mother, Oolayou Eyesiak, 51, in Iqaluit in 1986.

This gives a lot of details about his previous crime (double murder) and how a movie starring Jason Priestly was in the works.

Additionally, this article from 2003 says: “Atsiqtaq was later charged with the brutal stabbing death of Mary Ann Birmingham, an Iqaluit teenager. But after a preliminary inquiry, a territorial court judge concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to justify sending him to trial. No one else has ever been charged with the crime.”

''A man charged in connection with the death of a 15-year-old girl in Iqaluit in 1986 has been denied bail.

Jopey Atsiqtaq, who was charged with second degree murder last September, 38 years after the death of Mary Ann Birmingham, will remain in custody in Nunavut.

The evidence presented at Atsiqtaq's bail hearing in June, which was referenced in Judge Mark Mossey's written decision that he delivered orally in an Iqaluit courtroom on Tuesday morning, is under a publication ban.''
