She certainly sounds like she was fleeing from something and starting over if she was getting into a taxi with all her belongings.
I do wonder if she was escaping a dangerous relationship problem or a family problem, such as a potential honour killing.
This was back in the late 90s and I don't think we (Western culture) had much idea about that sort of thing then.
Just food for thought.

I do hope she started a new life somewhere.
