This case is being circulated on FB again in my province of Manitoba where this happened. Jean did not have dementia. There was no sign of a struggle. Some think she was taken by the same killer who snatched Thelma Krull one morning. Her skull was found years later by a couple of hunters in the bush near St. Anne, Manitoba. The perpetrator has not been identified/caught. I know someone who lives in an isolated area surrounded by bush and there are a lot of bears around. Is it possible Jean heard a noise which interrupted her breakfast, and when she went out to check, a bear got her and dragged her off? The location is close to the US border, with heavy bush all around.
From Google:

Typical Black Bear Attack Characteristics

  • Loud struggle
  • Blood at scene
  • Drag marks
  • Torn clothing
  • Hair/fur evidence
  • Scavenger disturbance later
  • Remains typically found within search radius

Fatal predatory black bear attacks on adults in Manitoba are very rare.

Not much to go on. According to her husband's Obituary, (2015), her maiden name was Hayduk. This is her father's obituary. (2011).

According to WeatherSpark, this was the weather October 2023.
  • Typical October daily averages in this part of Manitoba are roughly highs around 50 °F (10 °C) and lows near the frozen point (32 °F/0 °C) early in the month, trending colder later in October.
  • Daily precipitation including rain or early snow is common in October, though amounts vary and snow still tends to be sporadic rather than persistent early in the month.

...According to RCMP, Jean Backman last made contact with a friend on October 15, 2023. She was 70 years old at the time. Four days later, Sprague RCMP received a request to check on her wellbeing. Officers attended and searched her property and residence but were unable to locate her.

...Sergeant Paul Manaigre with Manitoba RCMP admits that this is a very puzzling file.

"If you were to believe in aliens, you'd almost think, was she abducted?" says Sergeant Manaigre.

Sergeant Manaigre says investigators do not suspect foul play as there is no evidence to support that conclusion. He says she simply vanished.

"Is she with someone that knew her? Did she just decide it's time to go somewhere else and lay low for a while?" questions Sergeant Manaigre. "The possibilities are almost limitless."

As far as any new developments, Sergeant Manaigre says there is still the occasional tip that comes in. Because this is still an active investigation, he cannot comment on the types of tips they receive. However, he notes that clearly these tips have not resulted in any significant developments.

wondering if she was a smoker (i.e. step outside to smoke)?

and, if so, what was her fav smoking spot?

Breakfast being layed out, LE's report that she may have left in her green jacket, makes me think she expected to be outside only a few minutes. Maybe she stepped out to check a noise, gather the mail, mail something, fetch a newspaper, greet someone who pulled in, look at the wood delivery, check on animals, or even just step out for a smoke; and then something happened quickly.

Interestingly, in Piney, MB there is a Canada Post facility over having driveway mailboxes (speculation). We don't know her address so we don't know if she was walking distance to this Canada Post facility, but may have been. Here are some photos of the Piney Post Office and where on the map it is located.

If she were walking there, could someone she knew have said, Hop in, I’ll give you a ride home? And then something nefarious happened? (speculation)

IMO, that's obviously a lack of knowledge about the basic nature of different kinds of crimes.

Thelma was a randomly selected victim (no one knew her route), taken from busy Winnipeg because she happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Evidence of an abduction was left behind.

On the other hand, if a crime occurred in this case, it must have been targetted, because she disappeared from her isolated home. Someone would have known about her living there alone. Also, police have not revealed any evidence of a struggle, search, theft, or any other signs of foul play

I pulled up an October 2023 calendar. Source: Google

1771916312414.webp

Key details:

Last physically seen Oct 13, 2023 was a Friday
Last contact Oct 15 was a Sunday
Firewood delivered; vehicle present; breakfast found Oct 16 was a Monday
Wellbeing check requested Oct 19 10:30 am was a Thursday

Depending on what time she would make breakfast, others in the community may be off to work and thus no one would spot her (speculation).

Was she not home for the wood delivery because she was already snatched? Or because she was doing an errand like the post office? Did the breakfast sit there from the 16th to the 19 and she could have been snatched one of those other days?
