''In the early hours of Nov. 26, 2005, the city of Thompson, Manitoba, was shaken by the discovery of a body near a local establishment. The victim, identified as 35-year-old Melissa Ivy Chaboyer, was a Métis woman and mother to a teenage son. Her untimely death remains an unsolved homicide, leaving a void in her family and community.''

''On the evening of Nov. 25, 2005, Melissa visited her mother before heading to her workplace for a night shift. She was employed in the service industry, which often requires late hours. However, Melissa did not arrive at her job that night. Her absence was uncharacteristic, raising immediate concern among her loved ones.
The following morning, passersby discovered Melissa’s body near a local establishment in Thompson''.

''The enduring mystery of Melissa Chaboyer’s death serves as a sober reminder of the work that remains in addressing unsolved homicides, particularly those involving Indigenous women. '''

''A single mother to one and a foster parent to several others, Melissa Chaboyer, 35, worked multiple jobs to afford Christmas gifts for her family. On Nov. 26, 2005 Chaboyer was stabbed to death in the taxi she drove, and her body was found on the pavement of a parking lot in Thompson, Manitoba. Chaboyer's homicide is being reviewed by the fourth investigator to work on the case, which is mostly handled by the Winnipeg RCMP detachment, 700 miles south of Thompson.''

''During the last eight to 10 years of her life, Lissa drove a taxi in Thompson, Man. between October and December to earn money to spend on Christmas gifts for her family.
Year-round, the Métis woman worked three to four jobs to provide for them.
"She was a foster mom to numerous kids in the community and from out of town," Chaboyer said.
He estimates his daughter fostered between 20 and 30 children in the last 10 years of her life.''

''Shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday, November 26, another taxi driver found Ms. Chaboyer's body beside her cab in the City Centre Mall parking lot. An autopsy revealed that she had been stabbed to death.

Thompson's three taxi companies (North Star, Driftwood Nickel and Cliff's) shut down from 3 p.m. until 7 the next morning as drivers attended the vigil. Cabs were parked bumper to bumper around the lot so that attendees could warm up after standing in subzero temperatures. Several restaurants donated coffee.

She was one of the gentlest drivers in the whole industry, said Jas Gills, manager of North Star Taxi. "If someone didn't have the money, she'd smile and say, 'pay later.' She never would have gotten into a dispute with someone."

Melissa’s family and the Thompson community continue to seek answers. They urge anyone with information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, to contact the authorities. The RCMP maintains that even the smallest detail could prove pivotal in advancing the investigation and ultimately bringing justice for Melissa.

The enduring mystery of Melissa Chaboyer’s death serves as a sober reminder of the work that remains in addressing unsolved homicides, particularly those involving Indigenous women. It underscores the necessity for ongoing community engagement, comprehensive investigative efforts, and systemic change to prevent such tragedies in the future.
