GUILTY Canada - Melissa Richmond, 28, stabbed to death, Winchester, Ont, 24 July 2013

  • #261
The other property is 478 Queen Street, Winchester.

I wonder if their marriage was failing and Howard bought the new place to try to keep Melissa in the marriage. It seems so obvious that they were way over their heads financially.

It not only sounds possessive, but also fake, because no person in this type of situation would be trying to look on the bright side of things, if a killer was technically still roaming free, after brutally murdering this man's wife.

Thanks for welcoming me.

@dotr, @Kbeb - very interesting observations, I couldn't agree more.

Before I comment, I should commit full-disclosure: I am not as "intimately" involved with Howard or Melissa as many of their friends are, but I have met them both on occasion and the speculation I have seen in the past 11 pages does not depict them truthfully at all.

This may be my first post on this forum - and the first of what I hope will be many, as I feel I have the same cynical view as most here which has helped me provide opinions that have been successful on other similar forums - but what I have read about Melissa's disappearance, murder, and opinions on Howard since the news broke of his arrest is completely out of character for both of them. I hope you will all bear with me for a few moments... I may rant, but only because I know of inconsistencies in the media reports many of you are reporting.

First of all - there was a LARGE number of people (including myself) who were at Melissa's wake that had NO idea Howard had been detained in this case. When it started to circulate (I won't go into how or why), the general concensus was "it has to be a mistake!" Most of you posting here DON'T KNOW them.... to learn Howard was arrested, questioned, and now facing murder charges - it was akin to being kicked in the groin.

Like here, and almost everywhere else this case has been discussed, speculation ran wild... as did anger, sadness, disbelief.

I can't, and won't, believe that law enforcement has the right man.... YET. You had to see them together in order to have doubt in this - I have, and do.

Second - throughout the entire investigation there has been SO MUCH misinformation reported (right down to Melissa's funeral arrangements, which is the ONE thing you'd think media would get right in such a high-profile case). I've seen so many comments about how Howard wasn't interviewed, being the spouse AND last person to see Melissa. I can personally say he HAS been interviewed - on several occasions. Yes, it has now been reported that he was interviewed as a "grieving widower", but I can assure you all that as the person who reported her missing he was definitely treated as anything but.

Third - his detention and the search warrants served and executed are part and parcel of ANY investigation (especially a high-profile one such as this) where there are no suspects within the first 48 to 72 hours. I won't go into any of my background for the time being, but I will say that I have had training in "criminal investigation". Whether Howard's detention and subsequent charge of murder is based on tactics or evidence, I can't comment, but I *do* know from past training that it has been employed as a tactic to prove or disprove a theory. Without a confession, it will be hard to determine which this is until a judge and jury has rendered a verdict.

Third - I live mere blocks from the South Keys mall that Melissa's car and body were found. If I were allowed to become a member before now on this forum I could have cleared up a LOT of the speculation since I am in this area EVERY DAY.

Before I go into any descriptions of the lot in question, I need to state that South Keys has a VERY questionable reputation - much of the area has been designated as "social housing" and with that come the "get rich quick" problems. As such, there is a heightened police presence in the area - right down to a "community police station" on the first floor of my building.

With the site - Kelsey's is not a 24-hour restaurant like Denny's is. Denny's is *maybe* 75-100 metres south of Kelsey's. What NO MEDIA OUTLET is reporting - the Loblaws grocery store (about 300 metres or so west from where Melissa was found) is open 24 hours. The WalMart located about 600-800 metres away (south-west) used to be 24-hours, but has recently started closing shop at 11pm - yet has staff on site 24 hours a day.

I am finding it hard to envision a murder (if the media reports you all are quoting are correct) being able to happen with that much risk in that area. With murder comes sound - and at that time of night, sound travels (to the residential area across the street, the Home Depot down the road with 24-hour staff, the 24-hour stores in the immediate area she was supposedly killed, and to my own balcony) if Melissa was killed, as media is reporting, in that area... without the fact that people are on that property 24-hours a day and there is a heightened police presence in this area to begin with...

Forgive me - I may be ranting here like a lunatic, but I am doing it based on what I KNOW and not on speculation. I may be biased because I know the couple, but I am also very familiar with the "how well can you really know someone" statement... It's why I have been divorced twice.

Like all of you, I'd want answers too. I just hope to get them based on fact, and not speculation.

Thank you all for welcoming me into your group. I hope I don't disappoint.

Peole said the same thing of Russell Williams - that it was completely out of character for him to torture and murder women. Clearly there was another side to him that few people saw, and the same may be true of Howard. Perhaps he was possessive and controlling of his much younger wife. Perhaps she wanted a little more freedom.

The purchase of the house that they could not afford suggests that something was going wrong months ago. He owned the house on Queen Street well before he was married. That house is very modest and not in good repair. Why would he put himself so far in debt when the house they were in was suitable and they didn't seem to have plans for a family to fill the four bedroom, 4400 square feet house? The fact that the murder was staged like a random rape also speaks volumes. Every indignity possible to unleashed on Melissa. She was half dressed, attacked, stabbed and left in a ditch. That's not something that a husband does to his wife when everything is fine.

I think it's safe to assume that there is evidence that Howard was involved in the murder. I don't believe it's possible to charge people with murder as a "tactic".

They were members of the Society for Creative Anachronism. Maybe A&S has something to do with that.

I wonder if $370,000 is a misprint, or whether they got the property for $100,000 less than the asking price. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=KXjQ0qx1wZs)

They borrowed $435,000 to buy the house, so if the price was actually $470,000 they had $35,000 down. If the house was only $370,000, then they were spending money like crazy. It seems to me that buying the house not only cleaned out their savings, but also meant losing the security of owning the home on Queen Street. That would have meant a big change in finances, meaning that instead of their incomes being pocket money, they would have had to cut back spending everywhere. Since the bank was pursuing the loan - because they hadn't made any payments - it sounds like the couple was unable to curb their spending. Even if the bank took the Queen Street property, they still had a $300,000 mortgage on a property that they absolutely didn't need.

"Castle Greyskull, as they called it, is a four-bedroom house with a two-tier deck that they bought for $370,000.

Land registry records show that on Feb. 14 the couple got a $296,000 mortgage from Scotiabank on Castle Greyskull.

That same day Howard Richmond got a $139,700 loan against the Queen St. home."

The house (Castle Greyskull) was being used to host A & S (whatever that is). Sounds like a pretty expensive hobby. JMO

A&S is 'Arts and Sciences', which basically means people get together and work on projects, either individual projects or a group project. These things can range from Calligraphy and Illumination, to sewing 'garb' (you would call them costumes), banners, making armour, cooking, brewing beer, etc.

The SCA can be an expensive hobby if you do a lot of stuff in it, or it can be a fairly cheap hobby if all you do is go to the occasional event.

Meh, not saying it applies in this case, but I've seen a husband charged with two counts of first degree murder of his pregnant wife, and later the case fell apart, especially when they found the guy who did it (assuming they got it right the second time). LE was believed to have credible evidence, but someone either effed up big time or LE hoped to break the suspect by the massive stress and incarceration. It can indeed be a tactic to get a person behind bars. Also to closely monitor/interview cellmates the suspect might confide in.
So far, it doesn't seem to be the case here. HR driving to police and then be detained indicate otherwise. But so far I have yet to see hard evidence.

Like all of you, I'd want answers too.

Welcome! I can imagine the circle of friends around this pair is going through a very hard time.

I just hope to get them based on fact, and not speculation.

The less of the former, the more of the latter; sometimes to a ridiculous degree. It comes with the territory.

Yet, to those who know Howard they would tell you it sounds just like Howard, introspective and reflective. It also sounds a lot like someone with PTSD, who tend to be people that are definitely possessive, but usually due to the terror of losing someone close to them, not due to an aspect of the original personality. Howard was anything but possessive prior to his many tours. I have no idea how he was recently.

I wonder if Melissa's stab wounds were done post-mortem?

  • #271
Did HR tell LE that he went to the gas station that night? If not, why not?

Where is the storm drain in the ditch? Near Daze St? I see a white structure in satellite view and a path leading to it.

  • #276
Yes, the path is near the Scotia Bank at the mall.

Why isn't google maps letting me copy a url anymore??? argh....

  • #277
That ditch is filled with water and was likely full of water when Melissa was placed there, considering the torrential rain in the last few weeks. Was Melissa found in the water?

I'm pretty sure that the Canadian law does not allow for charging and imprisoning people so that they will be stressed and potentially confess to criminal acts.

Not exactly.

Melissa went missing late Wednesday night.

Her car was found in/near a Denny's parking lot on Friday night by a Denny's employee who recognized her plates (she was a regular).

Her body was found in the ravine in front of Kelsey's. Kelsey's is actually closer to the main street (Bank), more than Denny's, so it seems.

The 2 restaurants are across from each other, with alot of parking in between.

I wish we knew the exact location her car was found, because I am speculating that her car was not close to the Denny's like she was going to go in the restaurant.
