CANADA Canada - Michael Hammond, 16, Richmond, BC, 24 Nov 1991

  • #41
Twenty minutes after Michael left home, he withdrew $20 from his $200 bank account. Unfortunately, the security footage was erased before anyone checked it. The amount of information we could have gained from that footage is huge. One inconsistency I noticed is that his missing persons poster says he disappeared from Surrey, but both the Doe Network and a news article list Richmond as the location. Surrey and Richmond are neighboring cities, but they’re both large. My initial thought was that maybe Surrey was mentioned because it’s more well-known, but if that’s the case, why didn’t they say Vancouver, which is right next to Richmond? Some suggest it could have been suicide, but I’m from Vancouver and know Richmond well—there are no forests there. The only nearby forested area, UBC Endowment Lands, is a popular trail where hundreds of people walk daily. If he had taken his life there, his body—or at least his skateboard—would have been found within days. The closest forest to Richmond/Surrey is Manning Park, a two-hour drive away, but even that is frequently hiked. After 35 years, surely someone would have found something. I also wonder what Michael used the $20 for. If the ATM was close to his house and he had a skateboard, why did it take him 20 minutes to get there? This case has so many unanswered questions, and it’s truly sad.

I’ve attached the news article and his Doe Network profile:

Circumstances of Disappearance

Michael was last seen by his mother and brother at the supper table. After supper Michael left his home and he has not been seen or heard from since.

He went out around six, his family thinking that he was going across the street to see friends, but he never arrived, and never came back. A later search of his room revealed his skateboard and jacket missing.

A printed note bearing his signature (found under a piece of paper on the lower tier of his night table) reads: " Yo! Dude. See you in heaven. ".

A few people say they've seen Michael around the Lower Mainland, but he has an identical twin and it's easy to confuse the two.

Doesn't sound like suicide to me. I vaguely remember hearing about this. I lived in Vancouver at the time and moved to Richmond in 95. I also used to work for the Newspaper (Vancouver Sun & Province). If the article says Richmond, I would be confident that that is where he was last seen.

Was he ruled out officially by DNA for the below. I saw someone mention he was ruled out, but nothing official with a link.

UK - Bristol, WhtMale 571UMUK, 25-35, fell from Clifton bridge, May'96

Also, I found this article interesting. The twin thought he was alive. I wonder if he mentioned something to the twin? Could have easily used the twins ID for a passport and left. Also strange typo in this article.

Jill often wonders about what it would be to see her son walk through the door. She has thought deeply about what she would say. But Brian says he is almost certain now that Martin is dead.
