Police are investigating a suspicious death after a man's body was found along a trail in the Waterford Valley area in St. John's.

The remains were discovered sometime overnight Sunday but it's not immediately clear when or by whom, according to a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary spokesperson.

Police remain on the scene Monday.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determine the cause of death.

The RNC is asking anyone who may have seen anything or know anything about the incident to come forward.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary will go to court in the coming days to ask for an extension on the time limit it can hold on to items belonging to a suspect in a west-end St. John’s murder case.

Police have filed an application for the extension, saying they need more time to examine five items seized from the area where the body of Michael King, 68, was found in May. They believe the items belong to a 26-year-old man.

RNC patrol officers responded to a report of a body in a wooded area between the Waterford Hospital on Waterford Bridge Road and Waterford Valley High School on Topsail Road about 8:30 pm May 30, arriving to find King’s remains near a trail.

After consultation with the province’s chief medical examiner, King’s death was ruled a homicide.
