Quebec police just retweeted in English that the suspect has still not been located.

#AmberAlert | Since Martin Carpentier has not been located, we ask citizens in the areas of Saint-Agapit and Saint-Apollinaire to be particularly vigilant. If you see him, do not intervene and call 911.

Premier of Quebec speaks of a national tragedy, which seems to confirm the loss of the two girls:
Fillettes trouvées inanimées: «C’est une tragédie nationale»

In the Yves Martineau coverage linked above by Sandfan, SQ is consoling a lady who I believe may be the mother of these two beautiful girls. There are lots of tears all around in the images.

We can hold out hope until we can't.

Sadly I think the SQ is wanting the suspect to believe the girls are still alive in an attempt to have him turn himself in.

Maybe LE were/are waiting for formal identification of the girls? rbbm.
Quebec police say they found 2 bodies in St-Apollinaire during search - NEWS 1130
''The spokeswoman, Ann Mathieu, says police cannot confirm the girls are dead.''

Amber Alert: Bodies of missing girls found | Montreal Gazette
''The search for two missing girls came to a tragic end Saturday when searchers found the girls’ lifeless bodies in a wooded area of St-Apollinaire.

Authorities are still searching for the girls’ father, 44-year-old Martin Carpentier, who is believed to have abducted his daughters, Romy Carpentier, six, and Norah Carpentier, 11''.

The officer consoling the two women explains that she ignored the social distancing and consoled women as they were reacting to the find of the girls.. The women were volunteers working with the search. It was raining when they were found.

Not only that, the airbags didn't deploy, suggesting that maybe nobody was in the car? No blood at the scene either, just some partially melted ice cream.

Based on the age of the vehicle, the airbags SHOULD have deployed even with no one in the vehicle. Weight-sensored airbags are fairly new. But the VW Passat has had many issues with airbags not deploying up until those manufactured from 2017 onward.

It's unbelievable that someone could have walked away from that wreck based on the condition and circumstances: high rate of speed, shredded tires, blown out windows, no airbags. Boggles my mind.

Maybe too much to hope for, but am hoping the girls were just "inanimate" due to shock and hypothermia.

If they were outdoors overnight, even though night temps in the area were not that cold (approx 20 Celsius), hypothermia can set in if the body temp drops below 35 Celsius for any length of time.

ETA: Edited .. as this is closer to Quebec City, the night temps were about 20 C (not 24 C as previously stated by me)

It's been very warm in QC the last few days. High humidity, too. Sodden clothing can contribute to hypothermia, especially if someone has been lying in a wet, humid environment like a forest.

I'm wondering if the father drugged these little girls if he planned on crashing the vehicle to kill everyone. It could be one reason why they may have survived the crash if they were in the car. I still find it hard to believe he got himself and those two children out of an upside down wreck within minutes of the accident.

Big difference between day and night temps though. Prolonged exposure to 68.5 F (lower than body temp of 98.6) can lead to hypothermia if not warmly dressed. Also, children lose body heat faster than adults just based on less body mass.

LAST HOUR | The Sûreté du Québec confirms the death of Norah and Romy Carpentier found earlier today

https://twitter.com/tvanouvelles/status/1282057031218868227?s=20

Rest in peace dear girls.

ETA: TVA Nouvelles seems to be the only one reporting this. I don't see it posted directly by Surete du Quebec yet.

Confirmed for 3 hours now based upon the french verb used since that original tweet and in other articles. Quebec police say they found 2 bodies in St-Apollinaire during search for 2 girls

"Inanimée" in french means not alive when applied to people; it doesn't mean "inanimate" (not moving) in the same context as it does in english. Someone lost that in translation as they've been using "inanimée" (not alive) all afternoon though no one would confirm it was the girls.

If they meant simply unconscious, the french verb (in the feminine form) they would have used would have been "inconsciente" or "non réactif" for non-responsive.

Now they are just confirming that the two bodies found during the search for the girls were indeed those of the girls.

Le contexte est souvent perdu dans la traduction!

Following along. This is terrible news.

I don’t have anything printable to say :(. Other than that I hope they catch him alive.

... especially when you consider the amount of damage the car sustained: all windows blown out, the tires blown, flipped over - and no deployment of airbags. All those add up to grievous physical injuries. It seems impossible that all three occupants could have exited an upside down vehicle...

RSBM

Unfortunately I can‘t bring it over here or link, however there is a fairly clear photo circulating of the car after the accident and it seems there may have been *some* hyperbole in *some* witness reports about the extent of the damage...

Apparently it didn’t roll/flip over, the windshield appears damaged (smashed but not blown out) and at least some of the other windows appear intact. There is some damage to the front & rear, and the front tires are a mess, but it’s not the complete wreck some reports have made it out to be.

ETA: and at least on one side (I think driver’s), the front & rear side doors appear reasonably undamaged. Take this all as JMO, speculation, etc.

can you link please?

If you go to the TVA nouvelles report which includes the video from M. Martineau, his FB account is linked at bottom left of the video screen.

I don’t think we can link directly here because he’s just a bystander & it’s his personal page.
