RCMP have blocked off a section of a rural property west of Winnipeg after human remains were found there on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they were called just after 2 p.m. to a property in the community of Oakville, about 50 kilometres west of the city.

Officers confirmed the presence of human remains outside a residence and secured the scene.

The RCMP's major crime services has taken control of the investigation and the forensic identification unit is also there.

Police have not provided more specific details about the location of the remains, or how they were found or by whom.

All they would say is the remains are "not historic in nature," which means they are relatively recent.

The investigation is in the early stages and more information will be provided when it is available, RCMP said.

Human remains add to Oakville mystery
''OAKVILLE — Human remains have been found at a vacant property where the previous resident was discovered dead three years ago, leaving area residents shocked and puzzled.

Multiple people in Oakville, a local urban district about 50 kilometres west of Winnipeg, said the property’s new owner made the grim find as he trimmed overgrown branches and tidied up around the dilapidated 1 1/2-storey home, which was recently auctioned off due to unpaid taxes.''

The remains were reportedly found inside a derelict Ford camper van, which, along with a Mercury car, was covered in snow and had been abandoned in the driveway for years.

That’s a sad situation. It’s three years before a municipality can auction a property for unpaid taxes. Meanwhile the owner was deceased and throughout that time, it seems as if nobody was close enough to become concerned and search the property to look for him.

Am I understanding this correctly? Human remains have been found inside an old camper van on property that belonged to a man who died 3 years ago?

Not that the man who owned the property was declared deceased 3 years ago and they've only just discovered the body? (which is how I'm interpreting the post above)

The remains found are NOT that of the owner? If so, who is this? Updates? Sex, race, age, COD... anything??

No further reports. I think I made an incorrect assumption because according to the Winnipeg Free Press (unable to link) it seems the previous owner was found dead three years ago so the remains recently found involves a 2nd person.

That deceased owner must not have any relatives such as siblings/spouse/children otherwise any beneficiary would’ve paid the taxes on the property knowing they would eventually inherit after will was probated, instead of allowing the municipality to sell it over non-paid taxes.

I wondered but didn't want to correct anything in case I was wrong too lol ;) Do we know anything about the previous owner?

Would major crimes normally be involved in the matter of discovering a deceased squatter on private property? Is it common for vehicles to be left behind as part of the sale? The license plate on the van is really clean considering the condition of the van itself. Something feels off.

Makes me wonder if someone died there or was someone dumped there?

Not much information at all. A squatter or an abandoned rural property used as a party place was my next best theory as well. I wonder if the person who’s remains were found was ever reported missing?

There are so many MP cases in Manitoba! Winnipeg alone:oops:

My mind went to "Breaking Bad" or "Into The Wild". Not to make light. Maybe a combination of both? LE would probably know right away if the deceased had been involved in drugs.

Also want to correct myself that the "major crimes unit" of most law enforcement is sort of the standard go-to unit for things like property related crimes etc. Idk why I thought it meant something more serious.

I suppose when the police don't issue an appeal or release a description, they already know what's going on. Would LE make a statement if they found a previously listed MP or just cross it off their list?

The RCMP claim more information will be provided. Perhaps they’re looking into missing persons reports and attempting to match DNA. But you’re right, it appears they see no reason at this time to offer the public a description and there must be a reason for that.

RCMP investigating human remains found in Oakville, Man.

"Police tape is surrounding the home, which is located on Second Avenue in the community, and an RCMP cruiser is at the scene.

CTV News spoke with Audrey McCormick, a neighbour, who said the home had been vacant for several years and was recently purchased by a new owner."

I wonder if the remains in the van may be that of the wife that died? Neighbors said he told them his wife died, but they never saw anyone come to take her remains. The article was a little fuzzy, but it sounded like they were intimating that they were not sure if his wife was ever buried.
