Guy Turcotte must spend 17 years in prison before being eligible for parole, Quebec Superior Court Justice André Vincent announced Friday morning.

Terribly sad news.

The Sûreté du Québec is mourning the death of Patrick Bigras, who was the first police officer to arrive at the scene of Guy Turcotte’s brutal double infanticide in 2009.

Bigras took his own life last Friday. According to reports, the officer left a letter in which he apologizes for the pain that his actions will inflict on his relatives. He was 45 years old.
