''KITCHENER — Al Pinheiro is patiently waiting for justice.

It has been more than four years since his sister, Edra Haan, 58, was found dead after an explosion destroyed a house in the Forest Heights area of Kitchener.

Six weeks after the blast, her husband, Udo Haan, was charged with first-degree murder and arson with disregard for human life. He was badly injured in the explosion at their home and spent a few months in hospital. Now 62, he remains in custody.

The charges have not been proven. Trial dates have not been set.

“We’d like to see the end of it sooner rather than later,” Pinheiro, 59, said in a recent interview. “Every day that goes by is one more day that you have to sit there and wonder what’s going to happen at the trial.”

But he’s a patient man. He realizes the COVID pandemic has created a backlog in the courts and the case may be complicated.

“We’ve all kind of sat back and said, ‘Hey, you know what, he’s still incarcerated.’ I think we’d be a little bit more pushy (to get trial dates) if he had been allowed out on bail. He’s still incarcerated, so if it drags on a little longer, he’s still going to be in there during that time.”

''KITCHENER — Killer Udo Haan should not be granted supervised visits with his mother in Kitchener, says the brother of victim Edra Haan.

“I don’t get to visit my sister,” Al Pinheiro, 60, said in an interview on Monday. “Her kids don’t get to visit her. Well, they get to visit a cemetery plot. Where’s the fairness there?”

Haan, 63, was found not criminally responsible (NCR) in February for killing his wife Edra, 58, and blowing up their Kitchener home.

The Ontario Review Board last week ordered Haan be detained in a psychiatric hospital, apparently in St. Thomas. His case will be reviewed annually.

Privileges for people found NCR due to a mental disorder are generally granted incrementally. Within a year, Haan could be allowed a supervised visit to Kitchener.

Haan’s mother was in contact with him when he was in jail and maintains contact while he is in hospital, psychiatrist Dr. Ajay Prakash told a review board hearing''

Udo Haan, who was not found criminally responsible for his wife's death when he blew up their home in 2018, will be receiving travel passes to visit the community.

The Ontario Review Board held a hearing at St. Joseph's Health Care London on Thursday to permit Haan to visit Elgin County and Middlesex Country while accompanied by staff or with indirect supervision. He will also be allowed to go anywhere in Southwest Ontario with an approved itinerary and indirect supervision for up to 72 hours for up to six times a year. He will also have access to five day passes twice in the year.

In addition to the travel allowances, Haan will also be allowed to potentially live in Elgin and Middlesex County at an approved residence.
