A man who worked at a restaurant in Ottawa's Little Italy neighbourhood pleaded guilty to gangsterism in a Gatineau, Que., court on Tuesday.

Valentino (Nino) Pollastrini, who worked at Giovanni's Restaurant on Ottawa's Preston Street, was one of 51 people arrested in a Quebec police sweep on Nov. 20.

Quebec police alleged that Pollastrini was one of the leaders of a ring that imported cocaine from Mexico through Vancouver for distribution in Quebec.

He was one of 21 people arrested in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. The other 30 arrests were made in Montreal.

Pollastrini pleaded guilty Tuesday to possessing property obtained from the commission of a crime and to committing a crime in association with or to benefit a criminal organization.

Pollastrini was sentenced to 40 months in jail, but because of time served, he will remain in jail for two years plus a day.

He has also been fined $75,000.
