Car plunges into Ottawa River, killing 4
Despite the efforts of rescue crews, four people died early Friday when their car drove into a murky marina on the Ottawa River. The victims are believed to have all been teenagers, although investigators have not released their identities or ages.
A military police patrol from nearby CFB Petawawa witnessed the accident during a routine inspection of an armoury around 1 a.m.
The car flew off a boat launch ramp and ended up at least 20 metres from shore, investigators said.
Minutes later, a local police constable dove into the cold water and tried to rescue the people trapped in the sinking vehicle, but he wasn't able to reach them.
Police and fire crews said they spent about three hours trying to attach a cable to the Ford Mustang to pull it out of the water, about 120 kilometres northwest of Ottawa.
The car was not being chased when it went off the road, according to investigators. They said it's not clear why the vehicle was driven into the river.
