New! Arrest made!

"A 25-year-old Ottawa man faces 13 charges in the serial sexual assaults case in which six women were choked and raped during a two-year period.

Yousef Hussein, 25, will appear in court Friday morning to face the charges: six counts of sexual assault, three counts of overcoming resistance, two counts of break and enter and two counts of committing an indecent act.

“Identifying and arresting the person responsible for these crimes has been a priority for the Ottawa Police Service and I want to thank the investigators for their work,” Chief Charles Bordeleau said in a statement. “Investigators have worked tirelessly to solve these crimes.”

The large-scale investigation began last September after police determined that two sexual assaults were linked through DNA evidence"

Yousef Hussein charged in Ottawa serial predator case
Hussein, 25, charged with 6 sexual assaults over 14 months while carrying expired student visa

"Yousef Hussein, who also owns a small company called RJ Moving, is charged with six counts of sexual assault, three counts of overcoming resistance, two counts of breaking and entering and two counts of committing an indecent act.

Police sources said they were led to Hussein after a man living in the same west Ottawa apartment building called them after seeing a surveillance video police released in the winter.

Police then tracked Hussein and later searched his apartment. They also asked for suspects to come in for saliva samples and polygraph tests to narrow their suspect list, sources told CBC News.

A police source also said Hussein is married.
Victims between 18 and 30 years old"

"Bordeleau thanked women who came forward with information about their alleged attacks to assist in the investigation. He said he hopes the arrest and charges can bring some closure to victims.

Insp. John Maxwell who oversees major case investigations also thanked the men who met with police after being identified and were cleared. In those meetings, police interviewed identified persons of interest, took DNA samples and administered polygraph tests.

In an investigation like this, ruling people out was as important as zeroing in on one suspect, Maxwell said".

Thanking the men that came forward to be ruled out is a good public relations move - good for them!

It will go a long way next time - and unfortunately there will be a next time.

Kudos to the man who recognized the suspect from his apartment complex after viewing the cctv release, and reported it.

Wonder if suspect's wife recognized him too?

how could she not have with those photos and the connection to the building they lived in? and yet, there is no report of her calling the police but another tenant

It's definitely not the name of the building, which has been announced on the news.. .and YAY I live here *sigh* the mirror you see him standing in front of his full length, but if you look in it at the beginning theres something just outside the blurring. I am going to assume either someones belongings or a person sitting on the ground. There are sometimes kids playing in the lobby, or waiting for their parents who are getting their mail(the mailroom is right there but you cant see it) or talking to the landlord/maintenance guys.

Where he comes running from near the end indicates to me that he definitely doesnt know the building and only came in because of chance. He's running from the stairwell, however theres an exit door right off the stairwell that would mean he wouldn't have been seen on camera.

If it was someone who lived here he would have come in said side entrance, gone up a floor and used the elevator(cameras only on main floor and basement and in pool areas and parking) then gone back out a side entrance.

I'm very glad I live on the top floor, but have always been uncomfortable in the neighbourhood, although the vast majority of people are lovely there is a high incidence of sexual assaults.

This happened quite a while, but they've really only upped security since it hit the news.

was the footage of him in your building then? hopefully the sexual assaults drop dramatically in your neighbourhood now - it's probable that he is responsible for lots more

Since suspect owned a small moving company, wonder if he is responsible for any attacks in other cities?

"In a barely audible whisper of his first public words after being charged with a string of violent sexual assaults, Yousef Hussein said he understood that there could be more charges laid against him if he tried to contact any of his six alleged victims.

The handcuffed man, appearing by video in court Friday afternoon wearing a royal blue polo shirt with a white number 3 on his right short sleeve, stood in stark contrast to the city’s conjured vision of a serial sexual predator that experts said wouldn’t stop unless he was caught.

Police allege Hussein raped and choked five women and was thwarted from doing the same to a sixth in crimes that gripped the community.

Hussein, 25, was arrested on Thursday afternoon by Ottawa police officers after being identified as the top suspect in 10 similar sexual assaults, some occurring outside, others inside the homes of alleged victims, dating back to 2012.

Police say it is possible for additional charges to be laid. He is also charged with three counts of overcoming resistance, two counts of break and enter and two counts of committing an indecent act.

“Identifying and arresting the person responsible for these crimes has been a priority for the Ottawa Police Service,” Chief Charles Bordeleau said in a news conference held earlier Friday. Four months ago, Bordeleau announced a task force specifically created to catch the predator."

"The arrest of a suspect in a string of violent sexual assaults is a relief, Julie Lalonde of the organization Hollaback! said Saturday.

But it should be used as an opportunity for a broader discussion about the nature of sexual violence and not create a false sense of security".

<<<<<Snip>>>>>

Lalonde, who founded the Ottawa chapter of the group that fights street harassment, had earlier criticized Ottawa Coun. Diane Deans when Deans said women must be vigilant at night and walk in pairs if possible.

But Hussein’s arrest, made after a person who lives in the same building called the police, shows that the way to stop a predator is not to tell women to stay home at night, but to broadcast as much information as possible, she said.

“It is important that he was apprehended because somebody trusted their instincts. That shows the importance of bystander intervention.”

She also noted that the suspect in the cases doesn’t fit many peoples’ preconceived notions of a sexual predator – he is good looking, employed and married".
