''Brazeau’s case was reopened in 2021 after the RCMP and Calgary police partnered to “reanalyze historical homicide investigations from the Calgary area that date back to the 1970s,” a statement by the RCMP read.

In 2022, the RCMP sought help from Othram Inc., a private lab in the United States. Meanwhile, CPS worked with two dedicated genealogists from Convergence Investigative Genetic Genealogy. A year later, the team singled out Edwards as a suspect.''

''Calgary police Supt. Ryan Ayliffe said advances in technology made the arrest possible.''

''The sheer age of a nearly five-decade-old Calgary murder case is delaying its progress in court, the accused’s lawyer said Tuesday.

For the third time, a possible plea from Ronald James Edwards was adjourned Tuesday, this time until Jan. 9 at Cochrane.''

''Milczarek noted his client was convicted in Calgary of attempted murder and sexual-assault dating back to 1989 and sentenced to 10 years in prison, which he unsuccessfully appealed.

But he said in the man’s 74 years, it’s his only conviction, adding he’ll explore contesting on constitutional grounds the DNA evidence against Edwards.

“I look forward to seeing what authorization they have in place to get that,” said Milczarek.''

''A 49-year-old cold case homicide was put to rest inside a Calgary courtroom on Monday with both the killer and his teenage victim's daughter — who was just seven months old at the time of her mother's death — speaking publicly for the first time since murder charges were announced.

Originally charged with murder, Ronald James Edwards, now 75 years old, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of Pauline Brazeau, a 16-year-old who was killed in 1976.''

''By the mid-1990s, police had a DNA profile of their suspect based on a semen swab taken from Brazeau's body after her death. In 2022, investigators used IGG to find relatives of the killer, identifying Edwards as their suspect.''

Suspect in the Murder of 16-Year-Old Pauline Brazeau Pleads Guilty

March 12

Ronald James Edwards has pled guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter in connection with the Jan. 9, 1976, death of Brazeau, whom he repeatedly stabbed before leaving her to die by a rural road west of the city.''

''Reading from a statement of agreed facts, Bigg detailed the events leading to Brazeau’s death just a few weeks after she had moved to Calgary from Yorkton, Sask., with her infant daughter, Tracy.

Bigg said Brazeau was employed at Peppe’s Ristorante on 17th Avenue S.W. and had gone there around 3 a.m. on the day of her death to unsuccessfully look for a pair of lost gloves.
