CANADA Canada - Pierre Mercon, 21, Richmond Hill, Ont, 1 Nov 1996

Unless the police know something that we don't, it could be because of the circumstances; he had no enemies, and no other risk factors for running away or leaving his family.

Also, he was at a bar, which can be seen as a fairly high-risk environment. It seems that he vanished between the bar and a street corner where he was going to meet his mother, in a fairly built-up area.

I wonder if he was hit by a drunk driver leaving the bar, who moved his body, or he got into a minor scrap with someone that escalated when they caught him alone.

No other items ever turned up, only the rain poncho that he borrowed from his brother.

Welcome to Ws lucho1970 and thanks for chiming in with that detail!

Wondering if there had ever been rumours about what happened to Marc and where he could be now?
If true that he had no known enemies, who would go to the trouble of removing him from the scene?
Wondering how his Mom is holding out all these years later and if she remembers anything new about that horrible night her son disappeared.

Maybe just a coincidence, but another tall, built, dark haired guy disappeared in the GTA just a few days after Pierre Mercon.

Maybe not such a coincidence when two young, attractive and apparantly sweet-natured guys, go missing within days of each other.
If they were female, I imagine people might think they were possibly victims of a sexual predator...

"Description: Mark was an artist who loved his family, hockey, music, and fun times with his many friends. He learned the art of glass blowing/turning to make neon signs, and was always drawing animated creatures. I thought it would be a nice way to remember him If we(his friends & family) posted our fond memories, funny stories and photos of him. This way we can all see and remember what a wonderful person he was.Mark went missing in 1996. Telling his adventurous, funny stories.."

I've also thought of the possibility that he might have been gay and LE suspect a hate crime.

Just to note, gay serial killer was in Toronto in 1996..

bbm.
"In 1988 Baumeister founded the Sav-a-lot thrift chain after working in a similar store for three years. The thrift store became a popular store for lower-income families and a percentage of the store's profit went to the Children's Bureau of Indianapolis.

The chain was a success and Baumeister became very rich. He also began spending a lot of time in homosexual bars in Indianapolis. Allegedly he would bring men he picked up back to his mansion where he would strangle them and dispose of their bones in the woods behind his home.

Investigators eventually ended up at Baumeister's estate after receiving a tip from a man who accused Baumeister of trying to kill him. Baumeister fled to Toronto and killed himself".

Good catch, dotr, but Baumeister died in July, and these men vanished in November.

For some reason, I am latching on to the eerie similarities between Mercon and Jake Just.

I do think it is likely that Mercon met with foul play, because he disappeared into thin air within such a short time frame, and nothing, save for the poncho, has ever turned up.

It almost seems as if someone watches, or follows and then at first opportunity, strikes and the victim goes missing. imo. Maybe someone people do not tend to pay attention to, like a teenager or a transient ect..imo

"The investigation into the disappearance of Jake Just continues, 15 years after the Midland teen walked away from a Halloween party.

On Oct. 30, 1998, Just, 18, attended a party at a residence in the north end of Midland. He was last seen walking home from the party with a friend, but decided to take a short cut through a wooded area. He was never seen again, even though an extensive and thorough search of that wooded area where he was last seen entering was conducted by police and volunteers.

Since then, under the direction of the Ontario Provincial Police Criminal Investigation Branch, the investigation by both police agencies has continued.

Just is described as male white, six-foot-two, 170lbs., with blonde hair and green eyes and at the time of his disappearance, was last seen wearing an olive green and beige long sleeve T-shirt, black D.V.S. size 11 running shoes, and was carrying a black “Jaguar” brand knapsack.

The province is offering a reward in the amount of $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible in his disappearance and/or death".

I'm not one to press the "serial killer" button the whole time, but it is one thing to consider when a disappearance is particularly strange or unexpected, or is clustered with similar ones nearby.

Disappearances of younger men were the basis behind the "Smiley Face Killer" theory in the U.S. (See Wikipedia link below.).

Smiley face murder theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The disappearance we discussed here could be isolated, or not, it is very tough to tell.

There were definitely bikers frequently in the area and known in the bars in the area. Since the police admit he didn't have any known enemies, it sure sounds like their conclusion of motive is correct. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and probably inadvertently pissed off the wrong person.

Started a thread for Jake Just and bumping for Pierre Mercon.
Odd, that both young men are from the GTA and both disappeared around Halloween.

Bumping for Pierre, almost 18 years and no sign of him.

The area where he disappeared from is an extremely well traveled and developed area. It's not a rural area, lightly traveled with deep ditches or woods where a body could be thrown after an accident where it might not be seen for a long time. If he had been hit by a car in that area, the body would have been found.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Mercon was last seen in Richmond Hill Ontario in the early morning hours of November 1, 1996. He had attended a Halloween party which had taken place at the Original Six Sports Bar located at 14 Oxford Street in the Town of Richmond Hill.
Mercon phoned his mother from the pay phone outside the bar and asked her to pick him up at a nearby corner. She had driven him there earlier in the evening so he could celebrate with colleagues who had just finished a federal job training program.
Mercon's mother drove to a prearranged street corner to pick up her son and found it empty with no one in sight. He and his mother were close and didn't mind his calling for a lift. That night there were upward of 200 patrons in the now defunct Original Six Sports Bar.
Only his poncho has ever turned up. It was found under the table where Mercon had been sitting.
His bank account, from which he used to withdraw $20 nearly every day, remains open but untouched.
Investigators determined Mercon had no enemies, no heavy drug-use background, no debts and no reported threats against him.
Foul play is strongly suspected in the disappearance.

York Regional Police spent months investigating a man named Dennis Lachance.

A police source said undercover investigators performed a lengthy and complex investigation in a bid to have him confess.

Although Lachance was arrested in 1997, he was released the same day, officers lacking the evidence to hold him further.

Bumping for Pierre, now missing over 24 years...

It was possibly a kidnapping... maybe he saw someone being robbed and went to help, and the same robbers killed him and took him away so as not to leave anyone at the scene... apparently he wasn't a drug user... maybe after the party he had a few too many drinks and got into a fight... or he was simply kidnapped under threat, never to be heard from again... reminds me of Charles Horvarth Allan, but also in Kelowna, Canada... his mother, Denise, makes me feel so sorry for him, just like Pierre's mother. She was very close to him... same age, but different dates and different places...
whatever it is
Rest in peace
