CANADA Canada - Romain Quénéhen, 26, from Belgium, forest in British Columbia, 26 Aug 2019 *car found*

The last news we got were when he was in Kitimat, on the 26th.

Then he was seen on route 37 and went into the water from some kind of side road/rest area where his car was found, next to the Bell Irving.

I’ll receive a map with the exact coordinates soon.

Search launched for owner of abandoned kayak spotted on river in northwestern B.C.

Some more info from the beginning of this incident. This was released August 30. It mentions the kayak and pack sighting from a work crew helicopter. They were floating down the river with no person in sight.

After an abandoned kayak and belongings were spotted on a river in northwestern British Columbia, police and search-and-rescue crews have been seeking to locate the owner.
  • At 3:40 p.m. on August 28, a crew working with a helicopter over the Nass River contacted RCMP in Stewart, B.C., to report that they had seen an empty kayak and a backpack floating in the river.
Although the crew searched the area, they didn’t find anyone in distress.

A search-and-rescue team and a swift-water rescue team from Terrace, B.C. conducted an aerial search on August 28 but couldn’t find the kayak, backpack, or any individuals.

The backpack was later found below the old Nass River Bridge on Highway 37, but it didn’t provide any information about its owner.

A search-and-rescue team conducted another search on August 29 with an airplane and an RCMP Air Services spotter.

Hi,

I’m Romain’s sister. I had to investigate myself because of Canadian police only wanting to contact with the Belgian one, so I already knew how helpful and nice Canadians can be.
While I said I would only collaborate with Canadian press, Belgian journalists kept harassing us and invented stories. So I’m reading the worst things about my brother all the time.
I made an account only to thank this group (I don’t know what the website is about yet). It’s been feeling so good to read positive comments on the disaster of my life and could finally find some peace and sleep a bit.
Thank you specially to @zecats to say how brave Romain has been, and about him being in his dream when the incident happened.
I’m myself going there soon in order to understand better what happens and it is also thanks to helpful locals.

Hi Elodie, so sorry for your brother, you and your family. It must be a horrific feeling. Hopefully he is found alive somehow, realistically, as the info seems to develop in a sorrowing way, I hope at least his body is found. I wish I had the guts to do the things he wanted to do and did. I have not. I find him very brave. Although I can't image the pain you are in right now...I hope this post gives you a little comfort. My thoughts are with you.

Welcome, @Elodie.q . I too am very sorry that your brother has gone missing and the circumstances do not look promising. On this website you will find a supportive small community of caring people, and perhaps some ideas as you and your family try to unravel the mystery of what has happened to Romain.

Just the thought of traveling so far to a remote mountainous area of another country to try to uncover what the police and search teams have not managed is daunting, and your own bravery in doing so is impressive. I hope you will have a travel companion, but regardless of that please know that people on this site will always be here to encourage you as you search for information and evidence.

I too sincerely hope that Romain is safe somewhere, perhaps in a remote shelter he found or made after whatever incident caused him to lose his gear, and that he has access to water and a food supply. But while that or other positive scenarios are possible, it's good to see that you are viewing his situation with realism. May you soon find answers to the questions you and the rest of your family have.

This is an update from July 21, 2020. I'm not sure but the text in red might be added info (although it is already known he wanted to go to Alaska, now they say he might have gone missing in Alaska)

CANADA: Romain, a young Belgian who went on an expedition to Alaska, is missing
Romain Quénéhen
Extinct in Canada
August 26, 2019
The young man from Saint-Ghislain has not given any sign of life since August 26.
It is a very disturbing cry for help that has just been launched on social networks. The family and friends of Romain Quénéhen, a young Belgian in his twenties, have not heard from him since August 26. "He disappeared in Alaska or British Columbia. He was last seen leaving Kitimat, British Columbia. Police are looking for him and his family is very worried. " writes one of her friends.
Elodie, the young man's sister from Hautrage (Saint-Ghislain, in Hainaut), for her part threw a bottle into the sea in English from Belgium for the trekking networks in British Columbia and Alaska, in order to 'get any information. "On August 26, he left Kitimat, probably on Highway 37, heading for Alaska," she describes on Facebook. "On the 28th, another hiker discovered his packraft (his boat). The police immediately opened an investigation and found his rental car in a separate location."

A video about Romain's disappearance was released in July 2021... I think it's good that his story is still being shared. I didn't listen to the video (because my french is already mediocre and text-to-voice french is even harder to understand) but I don't think there's any new info included.
