I recall looking at a map, particularly of the Ontario area on the route they probably would have driven, and yes there are a number of waterways so I suspect that could very well be their fate IMO. I just took another look at google maps, and there are several ways they could have driven from Edmonton to Montreal. The more northern route had much less in the way of lakes, etc. compared to the southern route, from what I could see. But of course we don't know which route they took. Perhaps your friend knows?
