Judge sets deadline for accused in Rori Hache case to make call on bail hearing

Feb 21 2018

"On Tuesday, however, Strong’s matter was transferred to Ontario Court for a judge to begin case management for the file. Justice Brenda Green ordered him to appear again by video Wednesday to announce whether or not he’ll seek release on bail, something he’s not pursued since his arrest in late December.

While he did not make an outright declaration Tuesday, Strong gave an indication he may be considering waiving his bail hearing.

“I don’t think that would really be a good idea for me,” said Strong, who in the past expressed “security concerns” about returning to Oshawa to appear in court in person. ...

Tuesday Justice Green asked Strong why he hadn’t yet chosen a lawyer.

“It’s a pretty big decision, ma’am,” Strong replied.

Green ordered Strong to appear by video again Wednesday, prepared to move forward.

“It’s a very serious matter and you have to start taking it seriously,” the judge said. “You need someone who is representing your interests.”

Strong’s appearance is scheduled for 2:15 p.m."

Accused in Rori Hache case now says he has a lawyer

February 21, 2018

"With or without a lawyer the case against a man charged in connection with the death of an Oshawa teen will proceed.

In December, Adam Strong, 45, was charged with improper/indecent interference with a dead body after the remains of Rori Hache were found in the apartment where he was living.

Strong appeared in court via video on Wednesday and said he has a lawyer, Tom Balka.

Balka wasn’t in court on Wednesday and when the Crown called his office, the office said they had been contacted by Strong but haven’t officially been retained yet.

The judge said with or without a lawyer the case will proceed on March 1."

You forget that police had been investigating McArthur for months. They already had evidence that showed he was likely involved, but when they got hold of his old truck and positively identified the blood found in the trunk, that was the positive connection they needed. There are multiple victims with McArthur, which rules out the idea that the deaths were accidental. You can't rule that possibility out with Strong. IMO Strong will be charged with first degree murder, and that he likely lured RH to his home, held her against her will, sexually assaulted her, then killed her after he'd grown tired of her. Its going to take some pretty intense detective work to prove it but I'm confident that DRPS is committed to getting it done.
Yes, I respect that there are differences between the cases, I didn't forget anything. I'm just thinking out loud about how similar they are in terms of dismemberment. I really hope DRPS can make the connection so he can get the charge he likely deserves.

I'm getting the feeling that it might be very difficult to make that connection. As the crime scene has likely obviously cleaned up, and the body was too decomposed to even determine a COD, cops are already at a disadvantage. Rori didn't have a phone, so tracking phones won't help either. If this guy acted alone, didn't talk, or didn't do anything stupid like videotaping, its going to be very difficult to figure out exactly what happened IMO.

Accused in Rori Hache case jokes, laughs during court appearance

News Feb 22, 2018

"OSHAWA — A man accused of committing an indignity to a young Oshawa woman’s remains cracked jokes and laughed aloud during a video court appearance on Wednesday.

While observers packing the courtroom sat in stunned silence, Adam Strong brushed off a judge’s admonition about his levity. “Everybody’s laughing,” Strong observed as he glanced about a video conference suite at the Central East Corrections Centre.

It was the latest in an increasingly bizarre series of video appearances by Strong, who has been in custody since late December 2017, ...

Seeking confirmation, the judge paused proceedings to have prosecutor Kent Saliwonchyk contact the lawyer’s office. That resulted in further confusion. Saliwonchyk returned to report the firm advised “they have not yet agreed to represent Mr. Strong” and that a decision on the matter would be made “in the next couple of days.”

As has happened at previous appearances, another court date was set to confirm whether or not Strong has legal counsel as his case proceeds. While dates for a future appearance were canvassed, Strong piped up. “My schedule’s open,” he quipped, then chortled.

Justice Green advised Strong that his apparent flippancy wasn’t funny in the circumstances.

“It was here,” Strong, who was handcuffed and wearing an orange jumpsuit, said as he glanced around the room he stood in. “Everybody’s laughing.

Strong was remanded to March 1. Justice Green said that if he’s without a lawyer at that point, he’ll be proceeding as a self-represented defendant, with pretrial hearing dates being set.

Saliwonchyk said the Crown is prepared to conduct a preliminary hearing for Strong, or proceed directly to trial, if that’s his wish.

“It’s his election,” Saliwonchyk said."

Tom Balka:

"Mr. Balka has wide ranging experience in all facets of criminal law, including complex criminal litigation and many murder trials, including the defence of First Degree Murder cases. Mr. Balka’s successful defences in murder cases have resulted in findings of not guilty, not criminally responsible, the withdrawing of charges, and guilty of lesser offences."

So what exactly is this guy trying to accomplish, is he straight up nuts or nasty to the core?
speculation, imo.

In an Oshawa courtroom, Adam Strong made jokes, snickered and laughed.
During his video appearance, he skirted a judge’s scolding.

“Everybody’s laughing,” the lumpy loser said.
“My schedule’s open,” he said before bursting into laughter.

My next question: Why do folks think he hasn't yet been charged with murder? What is the difference here between AS's case, and the Bruce McArthur case? BM could have been only charged with dismemberment as well, yet he has first degree murder charges across the board. I respect that we don't know exactly what evidence they have and don't have in both cases...but, seriously.

The difference is evidence. Police had evidence in the BM case readily available to them after months of investigation. Additionally, BM has a prior history of violence which helps their case. AS has no prior history (that we know of), and thus far, it appears that police do not have evidence of whether she was kidnapped or went willingly, who killed her, when or even where...or why. They may have some good ideas, but they may not have enough to build a strong case against him. The Crown will always insist that police bring charges where there is a reasonable chance of conviction. Where there is a lack of firm evidence, or a strong case for reasonable doubt, the Crown will advise the officers to continue to investigate / hold off until such a time the facts become clear. Its otherwise a waste of time and $ for them to prosecute a case they are unlikely to win.

NO LAUGHING MATTER: Accused in teen body parts case headed to pre-trial

March 1, 2018

"Strong laughed and made jokes during a court appearance
last week, but on Thursday, he stood quietly in his orange prison jumpsuit.

Balka, his newly retained lawyer paid for by legal aid,
chose not to comment after his client's latest court appearance.

Strong is scheduled to appear in court for his next pre-trial on
April 10."

The killing that rocked a community: Durham awaits outcome of Rori Hache investigation

March 1, 2018

"OSHAWA — It’s a crime that has rocked the community to its core: the killing of a young woman who vanished off the streets of Oshawa, followed by the arrest of a man in whose home her remains were found.

The terrible death of Rori Hache and the subsequent arrest of Adam Strong have rivetted residents of Durham Region.

Hache, just 18, was last seen in downtown Oshawa in late August 2017. Hopes for her safe return were dashed when it was confirmed that a torso found in the waters of Oshawa Harbour in September was that of the missing woman."

...

"Following Strong’s arrest, Durham police took control of his McMillan Drive apartment. For a month, forensics investigators combed through it, removing a large quantity of property and evidence that is being analyzed at the Centre for Forensic Sciences (CFS) in Toronto.

“I’ve heard many people say that’s the longest search at a residence in (Durham police) history,” said homicide Det. Darren Short, the lead investigator on the file. “We gathered a substantial amount of items from the residence.”

Some of those items were submitted to the CFS for immediate analysis, while others will be examined later. “We have met with CFS and prioritized what should go now,” said Short.

The investigation thus far has revealed no evidence of any victims other than Hache.

“There’s no indication we’ve come across of any other victims,” said Short. “That’s based on the information we have now.”

Oh yes, I understand that as well. I'm just surprised by the suspected lack of evidence, I suppose. Also, he certainly has a history of violence, just not a previously document one by LE. Crappy situation to say the least.

Woman calls for destruction of Oshawa 'house of horrors' where teen's remains were found

March 28 2018

"OSHAWA — A woman is calling for the demolition of the “house of horrors” where a murdered Oshawa teen’s remains were discovered late last year.
The house, on McMillan Drive in the downtown core, is a haunting reminder of the death of 18-year-old Rori Hache, who disappeared last summer, said Krysia Meeldyk, the teen’s godmother. She is calling upon city council to buy the house and raze it."

Oshawa city council urged to demolish ‘house of horrors’ where teen’s remains were found

The house, on McMillan Dr. in the downtown core in Oshawa, is a haunting reminder of the death of 18-year-old Rori Hache, the teen’s godmother told city council.

Petition, change. org:

https://www.change.org/p/mayor-john..._campaign=share_petition&utm_term=autopublish

"Krysia Meeldyk started this petition to Mayor John Henry

On August 28, 2017 Rori Chantal Hache went missing in the city of Oshawa, Ontario. The city and much of the country banded together trying to bring her home safely. In fact, she became known as "Oshawa' s Girl". Having recently turned 18, she was barely an adult and so bringing her home safely was our one true desire and drive. On September 11, 2017, a torso was discovered in our city's harbor which was subsequently identified as belonging to Rori. The date of death was established as November 9, 2017. Given the time between going missing and some of her remains being identified, it is reasonable to assume she was being held somewhere. On December 29, 2017, more of Rori's remains were found in a basement at 19 Macmillan Drive, Oshawa. This home is located in central Oshawa between King Street and Bond Street. Now being known as a "House of Horrors" (her killer committed deplorable and heinous acts on her), clearly this property does and will continue to carry STIGMA associated with the events that occurred there. When people pass by It, it will act as a visual reminder of the horrific acts that occurred there. This, in turn, may elicit psychological, emotional and or physical responses from those who have been impacted either directly or indirectly by Rori's death. It is for these reasons that I am appealing to John Henry, mayor of Oshawa to consider invoking the Civil Remedies Act, 2001, S.o 2001, c.28 in relation to this property. The potential for further crime to or upon this residence as a result of its most recent history is REAL.
Additionally, if left standing, it will act as a bastion of anguish and damage for the family and friends of Rori as well as for our community in general. I am pleading for relief for ALL parties who have been impacted--The homeowner, future potential renters of the property, family and friends of Rori, and our community. I am making a plea that this relief come in the form of an order to demolish the house at 19
Macmillan Drive so that it can no longer be a visual reminder of the depravity which occurred there and in our community. We want to heal, we are ready to begin healing...our community deserves this chance to heal.
Thank you for your compassion and your consideration.

I would think it wise to wait until the full investigation and prosecution of all perpetrators is complete and the case is considered closed before demolishing a crime scene. For some reason, I actually found it slightly odd that she is pushing so hard to have the house demolished asap. MOO.
