Highway of tears is several hundred kilometres away. It looks like it has more in common with Robert Pickton, where a sex worker was threatened in the past, and now maybe one has been murdered.

On Wednesday, Maureen Hansen, who lives on Springbend Road, saw one police officer and police dog conducting searches up and down the side of Springbend Road between Castle Road and Highway 97B.

“Across from our place there is another house and some bush area, and they took the dog into that wooded piece as well,” says Hansen.

On Thursday morning, three RCMP SUVs, one marked and two unmarked arrived and parked near the Hansen’s driveway. There were a total of six officers on scene. Hansen says they stood shoulder to shoulder, three on one side of the road and three on the other and did a search pattern that included the roadside ditches.

As well, Hansen says a neighbour had dug up an old tree stump and left it on their property by the side of the road.

“On Thursday they were right in there, officer on their hands and knees digging under that stump,” she says.

...A rally in support of the missing women in the region and their families was staged in the Yankee Flats area of Salmon Arm on Sunday morning, organized by Jody Leon.

Following the disappearance of the three women in 2016, Ms. Leon has spearheaded walks and rallies to raise awareness. The violence in her traditional Indigenous land has pushed her to act.

Sunday's rally drew about 75 people. There was drumming, people spoke and a red dress, which has become a symbol of murdered and missing Indigenous women, was hung on a street sign.

"We're not going to let violence live here," Ms. Leon said in an interview. "We're going to take a stand. We want everyone to become an activist."

She said the rally was to "bring the voice of healing" and to support the anonymous woman who made the complaint to police in late August. "She's a hero," Ms. Leon said. "There are women and men rallying for what she did to stop the violence."

What we know is that a sex worker went to a client's home and filed a complaint because she was threatened. Now a body has been found near the home where the complaint was made.

It seems like a bit of a stretch to connect this with missing hitchhikers several hundred kilometres North of this area. When was the last time a woman disappeared from Highway 16?

"Curtis Wayne Sagmoen, born in 1980, was arrested Friday and was charged with seven offences — disguising face with intent to commit offence, intentionally discharge a firearm while reckless, pointing a firearm, uttering threats, careless use or storage of a firearm, possessing weapon for dangerous purpose and possession of controlled substance — in connection with the investigation.

He remains in custody pending a scheduled appearance in Vernon Provincial Court on Oct. 26.

Looks like missing dates for three missing women in the area near where the remains were found are February 2016, early May 2016, and September 2017. The complaint of a sex worker being threatened was made in August 2017.

One living victim appears to be a sex worker, but I'm not convinced that all the victims were in the sex trade.

Are you drawing attention to the fact that one of the women missing last year was probably hitch hiking at the location where there is now a search? That doesn't make a connection beyond her home and the current search location - all within a close proximity of a few miles.

Highway 16 is an eight or nine hour drive North of the search location. It is also important to point out that although some of the Highway 16 victims are aboriginal, many are not. I don't see any connection between the current search and Highway 16

That is different from those who were missing while hitch hiking. She was camping alone after a big party in a remote outdoor location..

A suspect was identified in the Highway of Tears murders, although not all of the missing could be attributed to him. He was not a Canadian, and he died before there could be a trial.

It looks like the 2016 disappearances have been ruled out - most likely because the remains are not that old.

Looking more closely into the list of 5 missing women, and the information released about the circumstances of them going missing, I'd guess police suspect two of them have committed suicide, and two of them most likely have been victims of someone known to them (ie.not the same person). One case, Nicole Bell, is peculiar as virtually nothing has been released about the circumstances of her going missing.
