"MONCTON, N.B. – A spectacular fireworks display is planned for Tuesday night in Moncton to pay tribute to the three Codiac RCMP officers who were killed in the line of duty on June 4.

Fred Wade of Fireworks FX says three large shells will be fired into the air at the beginning of the Canada Day fireworks display.

He says the shells are expected to create a golden canopy about one square kilometre across, followed by a minute of silence.

Wade says he wanted to do something special to remember constables Dave Ross, Douglas Larche and Fabrice Gevaudan".

"A New Brunswick man has pleaded guilty to three first-degree murder charges in the fatal shootings of three RCMP officers in Moncton.

Justin Bourque also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder in the Court of Queen’s Bench today.

The 24-year-old was recently found competent and mentally fit to stand trial after undergoing a psychiatric assessment, but during an appearance in court today he pleaded guilty to all five charges he faces".

Wonder why this case needs a publication ban? imo.

"Smith advised Bourque he could be facing consecutive life sentences with no chance of parole for 75 years for the three first-degree murder charges.

He said by pleading guilty, Bourque was admitting to having intended to kill the officers and his actions were planned and deliberate.

Veteran defence lawyer David Lutz had requested a publication ban during the proceedings and the Crown prosecutors and judge agreed.

Last week, Bourque was deemed fit to stand trial and elected to be tried by a judge and jury. He waived his right to a preliminary inquiry.

No details about Bourque's 30-day psychiatric assessment have been released.

Lutz requested a publication ban on the contents of the report, which included a videotaped interview with Bourque."

<rsbm>

Bourque had originally elected trial by judge and jury, but since then has pled guilty. It says the ban was lifted once court adjourned, so (after his plea) and presumably the ban was only necessary during this hearing.

I'm thinking there is no need to extend the PB as there are no other court appearances between now and the date of sentencing. I would think however that an Agreed Statements of Facts will be presented in court prior to sentencing??? Hopefully there will not be a PB on that ... if justice is to be transparent in a case, let alone a case of this magnitude.

I am grateful that he pleaded guilty. It saves a lot of $ and time.

"The names of the three RCMP officers killed in a shooting spree in Moncton, N.B., this summer were honoured by the RCMP in a service Sunday.

The officers' names were engraved on Cenotaph, the Honour Roll and the Memorial Wall Plaques in Regina, which recognize fallen RCMP members".

very interesting: it is possible though unlikely that bourque will be given consecutive sentence for each charge...If he receives max sentence for each charge he would be 99 before being eligible for parole.

sentencing is Monday 27 Oct/14

''.. single conviction for first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence and a ban on applying for parole for 25 years. However, Judge David Smith of the Court of Queen’s Bench has said the Crown wants him to use a 2011 amendment to the Criminal Code that allows judges to extend parole ineligibility in the case of multiple murders.

In this case, Smith could decide that the 25-year ineligibility period for each murder conviction should be imposed consecutively, which means Bourque wouldn’t be allowed to apply for parole until he was 99 years old."

The fact that he pled guilty and mental illness seems to be a 'mitigating factor' chances are the maximum sentence won't be imposed.

".... the judge may consider mental illness as a mitigating factor during the two-day hearing.

Though Bourque was recently found competent to stand trial after undergoing a psychiatric assessment, an affidavit filed by his father Victor says that in the 18 months before the shootings, Justin Bourque’s mental or emotional state deteriorated to the point he was “ranting and raging against all authority.”

Unbelievable !

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-b...-rcmp-shows-no-remorse-for-killings-1.2814230

"He says he "feels kind of good," but isn't looking forward to imprisonment. "Though I kind of expected that and prepared mentally."

He also complains about his arrest by members of the SWAT team. "Honestly, I feel mad at those officers," he says.

"I know I killed people, but isn't that more humane than people who grabbed me by my neck and stepped on my balls?" he asks, adding later that he also chipped a tooth."

He's fortunate professionals found him first, I suspect the general citizenry of Moncton could have happily inflicted more damage than what he experienced. (MOO)

http://www.citynews.ca/2014/10/27/bourque-targeted-mounties-because-of-badge-they-carried-crown/

“He targeted them not because of any animosity to them specifically, not for lust or greed or any of the normal things you might see in a murder sentencing,” Gunn told the Court of Queen’s Bench.

“He targeted them specifically because of who they were, what they did, the badge they carried, the flash on their shoulders, the uniform they wore.”

Reading about him today made me think of a disgruntled wannabee. He felt as if he could be a soldier but just had not found his ''war'' from what I read.

"I was expecting to die, but somehow I got the mentality to be a soldier. But I never found my war," Bourque tells RCMP."

I think he was jealous of others who had the self discipline to meet their goals. MOO

Amazing how this sentencing hearing is going on just after the events in Ottawa and most people seem to have already forgotten about this incident. I hope he gets the full 75 years. Sorry doesn't cut it.

The scary thing is that there are a lot more people out there on these conspiracy websites who could do the same at any moment. Not to mention the "recruitment" sites. It's really getting scary IMO.
