“A 34-year-old Calgarian who has been missing for more than two weeks is a loving big brother, a "yoga fanatic" and an extrovert known for his witty banter, his family said as they appealed to the public for help finding him.

Simpson Van der Linden was last seen on April 21. On that day, he spent time in the Beltline and possibly Signal Hill.

That is also the last day he returned any calls, texts or spent time on social media, with his family saying it's totally out of character for him to be out of touch with them for so long.

"Anyone close to him is devastated and exceptionally concerned by the news of his disappearance," his sisters, Bretton and Kara Chad, wrote in a statement sent out on Wednesday.......”

Van der Linden had just returned to Calgary from Peru.

He was supposed to travel on to Costa Rica to renew his diving instruction certification but returned to Canada as travel restrictions ramped up, according to his mother, Laurel Chad.

Chad says Van der Linden had subletted his Calgary apartment so when he returned, he was staying at an AirBnB.

When he got back to Canada, Van der Linden didn't feel well so he was tested for COVID-19 and self-isolated for 14 days.

The swab came back negative for the virus but, two weeks later, Van der Linden still wasn't feeling well and had attended the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre at 4th Street S.W. in the Beltline on a couple of occasions, according to his mother.

Van der Linden's family said they were releasing details of his last known whereabouts in hopes it will trigger information that may help find him.
On Tuesday, April 21, Van der Linden attended the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre around mid-afternoon, his family says.

Later on, security camera video showed Van der Linden took out money from an ATM at the RBC at 2215 4th St. S.W. at about 5 p.m.

Finally, around 8 p.m., the missing man's phone "pinged" in the Signal Hill area.

Van der Linden's family says he spent most of his time in the Beltline neighbourhood of Calgary and say "it just doesn't make any sense that he was down in that Signal Hill area.

"That has thrown us for a loop," said Chad.

When I first read about Simpson’s disappearance, mention of Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre is known as the location of Calgary’s only Safe Injection Site. In this update, the family clarified he went there seeking medical attention, assumably to avoid stereotyping him as a drug addict who might just be somewhere off the grid with others. To the contrary, it seems he was very conscientious about his heath which makes his unusual disappearance all the more alarming.

I hope he contacts somebody and is safe and sound.

The news report doesn’t state how long Simpson was in Peru or specifically when he returned but the difficulty encountered by thousands of Canadians was often featured in the news after Peru suddenly announced a State of Emergency and locked its borders on March 15th.

If it was after Mar 15th he’d have returned on a repatriation flight. I wonder, did he become acquainted with new people also returning to Calgary whom the family might not be aware of, especially since he was described as a very outgoing sort of guy? Just my thoughts...

His phone pinged, but that could have just been his phone there, like if someone else had it. Just a possibility JMO

Very true. As a security camera video showed him withdrawing cash from an ATM around 5 p.m that same final day as his phone pinged, he must’ve had a purpose for withdrawing money. Was the withdrawal a small amount or a substantial sum? Did he usually pay by cash as opposed to debit card?

It’s stated the last ping was at Signal Hill but was the cellphone pinging consistently between 5pm and 8pm and if so in what area? Was the cellphone used for calls or text messages during that time? Hopefully by now CPS knows some of the answers because somebody must know something and I can understand why his family is extremely concerned.

I was curious what Beltline to Signal Hill looks like. Signal Hill is close to the city limits. Has the area been searched?

He was living in Peru, returned due to virus, felt ill, tested negative, continued to feel ill, disappeared. Did he disappear during 14 day quarantine at an AirBnB in Beltline, his phone uncharacteristically in Signal Hill?

CPS report he was last seen at 6:45 pm so a question would be what was he doing and who was he with between the 5pm bank withdrawal and the 6:45 sighting. That narrows the timeline somewhat. I think CPS may know more information than they’re able to release to the family especially as it’s indicated they are indeed taking Simpson’s reported disappearance very seriously. Going by his profile on LinkedIn which also mentions yoga, he is an extremely keen, talented and active kind of person, no apparent reason at all for him to fall off the grid.

Something I wonder about, as the last reported date was Apr 21st, how did it come to be no friends close to him in Calgary noticed the absence of any contact with him for two weeks because surely he had other people in his life, aside from family.

“Simpson’s case has now been upgraded to the highest level of missing persons investigations by the Calgary Police Service, however very few leads have been uncovered.”

Excellent thought. Interestingly the quote below lists symptoms for West Nile which virtually mimic COVID-19. But where is he? I’d assume CPS has checked hospitals, or sure I hope they have. If he was presently under hospital treatment and improving that would be very good conclusion for all.

Peru Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile
“West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a Culex pipiens mosquito, commonly called a house mosquito, which has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms. In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur. People older than 60 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.....”

He may also have come down with some kind of parasite. Those can really mess you up, and they're difficult to diagnose. MOO.

It seems that Simpson was diagnosed with another illness and maybe was given a medication which might have caused some side effects such as disorientation or memory loss. This might have made him vulnerable to foul play especially after withdrawing money from ATM.
