Timeline:

1. Morning of 5/12 - Left home to do some errands (such as?)
2. 2:15 PM - Reported as missing. I wonder who reported Sinikka as missing and why was it rather quickly? Was she supposed to come home by noon, for example, and didn't?
3. 9:30 PM - Sinnika's car found on Juniper Place Road, she is not in the car. The exact location of where her car was found is unknown, here's a look at the area Google Maps

What could have happened to Sinikka?

Following an overwhelming response from the community looking to help in the search, police are asking the public to stand down.

"Due to the terrain, they are only using specialized search and rescue members for the main search area, which again remains focused on the Mount Erskine search area," said Cpl. Chris Manseau, a spokesperson with the B.C. RCMP Communication Services.

"However, they [search and rescue] are asking anybody who wants to help in the search do so on their own properties or check in with their neighbours to help search those properties for this missing person."

Very curious.
How far from home was the car found?
I haven't seen anything about where she lives or where she was supposed to be headed to run errands.
Juniper Place Road is pretty secluded, just a few houses that I can see.

If she was already reported missing less than just a few hours after she was supposed to be running errands, it seems like there's something BIG missing from this picture.
Some detail that made it urgent enough for someone to phone the police.

I wonder what was happening in this ladies life? That is a very quick missing report. Could she have left a note or texted someone? moo

If I went out in the morning to run errands, and my husband or kids filed a missing person's report by 2pm, there would most definitely have to be some sort of other thing that prompted them to do that.

If she went on a regular morning hike, that wouldn't be called an errand, right? Maybe she ran her errands before that. Why would she otherwise leave her car on the side of the road? She could have gone for a hike and had an accident due to the rough terrain.

Perhaps she had an appointment that she missed and couldn't be contacted later. Or said she was going to a store but wasn't seen there. Maybe she went to visit someone and never arrived, or the person in question knew nothing about it.

I'm wondering about the cell reception in the search area. If she were on a mountain trail and had her phone with her, would she be found?

Was she working from home? Did she miss any work-related appointments that day?

Friends say UBC professor's disappearance on Saltspring Island is 'concerning' and 'unusual'

She lives on the island with her husband. They have two children. According to the BC RCMP spokesman, she has hiked in the area before.

Elliott is an avid hiker, and doesn’t think twice about a 10 kilometre walk...

“Sinikka is one of the most reliable, personable people I know, and she’s not someone who would recklessly go for a long hike and not tell someone where she was going,” said Greer (a friend)...

Firstly, Salt Spring is a small rural area with a population of 10,000 or so, it's not like police are dealing with much crime.

Then, if she was due back for lunch and hadn't called to say why she was late, and couldn't be reached on her cell, many close families with small children would call police. She might have been in a car accident.

It depends on your cell plan, if you go with the main provider I'm sure you could get cell coverage.

This isn't backcountry wilderness, it's more of a hill, compared with Whistler, etc. The trail to the top from Juniper could be done in 20 minutes by a motivated, fit hiker just wanting a workout.

I don't live on Salt Spring, but I've spent time there.

That was sort of what I meant. Was she expected at a particular time? Were attempts to reach her met with voicemail? Did she call and say she was running late? There's some details left out, as to why she was reported missing after only being away from home for a few hours at best.

It appears Juniper Place Rd is a connecter that winds through a small area only. It’s not near ocean. And not near the ferry landing at the opposite end of the island. So unless her car was dumped there- or she parked & hiked far away- she should be close? Not aware of many predators in the Gulf Islands- occasional black bear or rare cougar. It sure is a fast MP report & rapid, thorough response. Imo

If you look at the photos in my link above, it is a steep drop from the lookout.

I share everybody’s bafflement about why she was reported missing this fast.
Was something going on with her lately?
Was she someone who never did something spontaneous?
Was there an argument home, hence the direct worry?
Was she in need of some meds she doesn’t have with her and would never miss taking?

My hubby better not report me missing after a few hours, because we would have some words about that when I’m back...

The area her car was found lends itself to think she went on a hike, or it was placed there to make that impression.

Could she have had an accident while out and about in the woods?
