MONTREAL — Search and rescue teams focused on a narrowed zone Wednesday in their search for a missing Quebec businessman and his teen son who haven't been heard from in a week.

Businessman Stephane Roy and his 14-year-old son Justin were reported missing after failing to return home from a fishing trip as planned last Wednesday aboard his Robinson R44 helicopter.

Roy is the founder and owner of Les Serres Sagami Inc., which produces greenhouse-grown tomatoes and other produce under the Sagami and Savoura brands.

Capt. Trevor Reid of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Trenton, Ont., said a 4,000-square-kilometre area northwest of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was targeted based on cellular phone data obtained by Quebec provincial police.

Initially the search area — forested, rocky terrain with several lakes — was about 20,000 square kilometres.

The pair were reported missing last Thursday after they didn't return from a chalet in Lac de la Bidiere, a remote area in the upper Laurentians regions west of La Tuque, Que.

The following was originally written in French.

ICI Grand Montréal

The outgoing president of aviators quebec gilles lapierre evokes some possibilities:

▪ the device has laid delicately somewhere, allowing the signal to be beacon.

▪ The helicopter is at the bottom of the water, which chokes the signal of the beacon

If they did a precautionary landing the ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitter) would not be activated automatically. It is triggered by a severe impact parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft.

aircraft? did a helicopter go down while searching? oh no. Isn't this about a missing fishing boat?

I assumed "helicopter" was a loose translation of something else? something more nautical that goes around and around like a helicopter.

I had to read it a few times myself. It appears that the wealthy Mr. Roy and his son took their own private helicopter to go on a fishing trip. They did not return and there is no emergency signal coming from their helicopter. I guess it's assumed they crashed?

Stéphane Roy's brother remains hopeful as search continues for missing helicopter

The brother of a prominent Quebec businessman and his teenage son who went missing six days ago says he hasn't given up hope the pair will be found.

Stéphane Roy — the president and founder of the company that sells greenhouse-grown produce under the Savoura brand — and his 14-year-old son were expected to return by helicopter from their cottage in Quebec's Mauricie region last Wednesday.

The pair has not been heard from since.

"The morale is still very positive. We're sure that those people, my brother and his son, are still alive," said Daniel Roy, Stéphane Roy's brother.

[...]

Daniel Roy says the family and friends have no idea what happened to his brother and nephew.

He said Stéphane Roy is a very experienced helicopter pilot who usually follows a specific track to get home.

"Did he go off track for any reason? We don't know," Daniel Roy said.

He said, either way, he's positive his brother's fighting spirit will bring him home.

"We know that if he's somewhere in trouble he will fight all the time," Daniel Roy said.

Air Force to end search for Stephane Roy, son

A statement from the air force today says it will make the "difficult decision" to reduce its search operations and relinquish the case to the provincial police as a missing persons investigation.

More than 90 people with the air force, the Canadian Coast Guard and other rescue services had been looking for the pair.

No, I used the term "aircraft" to explain how an ELT works generally. It was definitely a helicopter they were in. I hope they just autorotated down somewhere after a problem.

The family is asking provincial police to carry out a ground search of a vast, heavily wooded area where the missing helicopter may be found.

Quebec provincial police halted aerial searches on Monday of the upper Laurentians area in favour of gathering more information to focus their search.

The family will continue to search from the air with the help of volunteers, but organizing ground searches is the responsibility of the police.

Police said hikers or vacationers in the woods should keep an eye out for anything that might move the investigation forward.

According to this article, it is a Robinson R-44 white helicopter that passed inspection in April. Stephane's brother said Stephane safely landed his helicopter a few years ago after losing engine power in midflight.
